Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Is there any area of history that either you or dd is interested in? Also consider what resources you have or have access to.

For a first grader I would consider doing a unit approach and be realistic that you may only 'study' an area for a few weeks at a time.

Pick any area and find a few good picture books, maybe one or two chapter books suitable to dd's concentration span. If suitable Dover or Bellphron have fantastic colouring books. I always like to do a hands on activity suitable to the reading as well.

Feel free to ask more questions, I love history I ask these sorts of questions about science.

One thing we try to do is do local/regional/state history, wherever we are, combined with some basic map skills. This way, you can do some outings that will make things more interesting for your first grader, and help you with those historical details. Often, you can learn a bit about local history at a state park or museum, and that gives you some space for younger children to run around and play.

In first grade, most children don't need detailed history; it's OK to go light on this subject. There are lots of great picture books about famous people in history at most libraries...check the biography section...and you could always do Catholic history using Tomie de Paola books...

1st grade - I'm lucky if we are doing anything beyond the 3 Rs and religion. I figure Bible stories in a historical sequence serves for both religion and history. Or we read picture books on whatever strikes our fancy. There is plenty of time. Whatever you do, have fun and don't stress. I'm actually looking at some of the Montessori type geography and map stuff for my to be 1st grader (if we manage to get to/ afford it- the atrium and catechesis materials are first priority).

Thanks everyone for you ideas. After looking at what I planned for the other subjects, it seems that I am covering history already LOL

Also, since she will be starting level 2 CGS, I am not worried about church history.

I will probably continue with my OT and NT Bible stories and Saint studies and use those for history.

Again thanks for showing me that I already have it covered.
