Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Does anyone know where I can find a fun language tape for Cantoneese? Our dd would like to learn it, but most Chinese language tapes are Mandarin and so is the local Saturday Chinese school. We know that Mandarin is now the official language of China but the grandparents speak Cantoneese and the two dialects are so totally different that cannot speak to each other.

Pimsleur makes one, but fun is not a word I'd use for it. Still, Pimsleur is supposed to be the easiest way to learn Chinese. Read more here.

Perhaps a better choice for children might be found here:

Chinese tapes. This site includes Christian and homescholing materials in both dialects. I cannot vouch for them, just popped up in a search...is that Barney in Cantonese?

Kathryn,
We use the Pimsleur Mandarin Chinese tapes and as MacBeth pointed out, no, they are NOT fun... but YES, they work! Way 'back in the dark ages, I studied Mandarin the traditional way, with a mix of oral, grammar, writing--- it was agony (and I really like studying languages). I really think that Pimsleur,or any conversational method, is the way to go with beginning Chinese, be it Mandarin or Cantonese. Pimsleur does offer Cantonese Chinese.

MacBeth,

Thanks for the info and links to Cantoneese language programs. We will definitely be purchasing one of them and children's grandparents will be very tickled. They couldn't get their son (my dh)to learn - he can say Happy New Year and Wash Your Face and Wipe your hands in very slaughtered, accented Cantoneese and that is the sum total of his vocabulary.

Now if we could only decide - price may dictate where we start but if anyone has any experience with the $13 - $14 tapes MacBeth mentioned, we'll be more confident.

Again - thanks. Next time we go to a Chinese restaurant all of us Low Fawns may surprise the crew and order in Chinese! What a shock - since my dh still always gets my tea and I get his Sprite. (He hates tea!)
