After researching so many History options for my 3rd and 6th grader, I think that maybe the easiest to blend would be Sonlight. I want to teach the same History to both children. I want it to be challenging and interesting (if not enjoyable) for both of them. Sonlight level 6 is World. Sonlight level 3 is American. My preference right now is World. Should I buy the Sonlight level 1 Intro to World for my 3rd grader? Should I buy Sonlight Level 1+2? If 1+2 is condensed will 3rd grade ds be centuries ahead of 6th grade dd?
I’m afraid my county might tell me I can’t teach World History because 3rd grader should be doing American now. Should I sprinkle some American in once per week? Maybe MA would address this better because they offer both studies each year. I guess I’m still working this out. Any advice would be most welcome!

Hi Kathy,
I have also been searching History combos and I have found 2 more to possibly help you. We tried Sonlight and I did not like the daily assignments. I was not disiplined enough to feel comfortable with it. Tapestry of Grace is similar except you can use it with all children from lower grammer through highschool. check out their link: Tapestry of Grace
Another choice we are considering is using the Susan Wise Bauer books Story of the World. They are written for children and the activity books work for all grade levels in the elementary level. See Story of the World I hope this helps and does not just give you more confusion.

Anne,
Thank you!
I've heard great things about Story of the World, but never looked at Tapestry. I'm sure I've read it mentioned here. I'm browsing the site now. It's so slow with dial up!
I'v not seen anything like it that addresses all grade levels.
Thanks for giving me something else to consider!

Sonlight is very difficult to combine with children in those age categories.
I would either do American for both of them, with the younger using something like Pioneers and Patriots (and then get reader ideas from the SL Catalogue) and the older using something like From Sea to Shining Sea (CHC sells this) and you can pull readers from SL's core 100. For read alouds, choose books from core 4 listed as "read alouds" and likely they will interest both children.
The other thing you can do for American is to try to use core 3+4. But Landmark is VERY difficult for the average third grader to understand and the readers are likely to be too difficult unless the 3rd grader is a very advanced reader. This would work better if the 3rd grader is closer to 9 for most of the school year than 8.
Or you could do World for both of them. I would use Story of the World, too. For readers, choose from cores 6 or 7 for the older child, depending on which volume of SOTW you choose (SOTW 1 is the least problematic for Catholics) and you could pull readers for the younger child from SL's core 2 (there are several levels available). You could choose read alouds from any of the world cores that look interesting and match the time period of the volume you choose.
hope this helps.

Kathy, my older two boys are grade 2 and 6 this year and we combine history every year. We use Story of the World (this year it was the middle ages) and vary the level of work for each child. We do much of it together, but in general, the older does more research and writing, while the younger gets more read-alouds and narrates more.
We did American history last year for 1st and 5th and older used Sea to Shining Sea (loved it) and younger read the D'Aulaire books as a spine - Leif the Lucky, Columbus, Pocohontas, Ben Franklin, George Washington, etc.
Next year it will be Ancient history with SOTW in a similar fashion. I still want to do some American history with them, but may focus on geography.
I love combining history so we can just dive into an era as a family!

I just had another thought. Have you checked out the Beautiful Feet Curriculum? It has different levels however you may be able to combine the 2 grades easily.Beautiful Feet
Check it out to see what you think!!
