Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm going to be doing the Bible timeline out of the CHC 1st grade plans with my 1st grader and Kindergartener next year. I am also planning on starting the first Story of the World with them next year. Will it work to create one timeline with information from both sources? What are my options for creating the timeline? I would love to put it on the wall because I think it will make more sense to them but I'm not sure I have that kind of space in this house. I'd love some options!!

Thanks!!

When we did a timeline, we fan folded it so that it could be put on the wall or folded to be tucked into an 8 1/2 X 11 binder. That way we were flexible and if we didn't have the wall space or didn't want the thing taking over our whole space, we could unfurl it across the floor while we were doing something and then fold it up neatly and put it away when we wanted to.

I'm not familiar with Story of the World, but we are big timeline folks here, and from experience I would think it is very doable to have both on the same timeline. My suggestion would be to keep the information seperate so that you can focus on one or the other without being overwhelmed by both at the same time, yet by still using the same scale and being on the same sheet, you can see both together when you want to step back for a good overview of the connections between them. Some ways we have done this is:

1) above the line is Bible History, below the line is the secular history from story of the World. It is a great visual way of making connections.

2) color code lines or the information.

My dd (age 15) put together a timeline of various ancient civilizations on the same timeline and used strips of construction paper for each one. So, for instance, she used red for Rome, brown for Israel, another color for the Babylonians, another for the Phoenicians, another for the Egyptians and another for the Greeks, etc. Now as various groups become vassal states of another, she lines them with the conquerers color (ie brown lined with red)- and when they are completely swallowed up by another, their timeline runs into the other and takes the dominate civilations color. There are many that become red.

These are wonderful visual ways to sort out all the confusion. It also makes it easier to understand the interactions of these groups and things that are happening concurrently. I love putting more than one source on the same timeline. The big danger is overcluttering where you cannot sort through individual focuses - but if you do the above/below line or the color coding, it should be very workable and even more useful than having them on seperate timelines.

We have found it helping us discover so much about the interrelationships of the different peoples and how God"s providence guided it all. It has also helped us a whole bunch in sorting through the confusing details of Bible History and we can now place these events in the context of secular history.

I realize that we are working with much older children here, so I would think there is even less danger of major clutter - the biggest concern with timelines that cover everything!
