Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I just purchased a *wonderful* book called "Geography of the World: The Essential Family Guide to Geography and Culture" (DK publishing). It is just beautiful to look through! It does a nice job of balancing maps and geographical facts with interesting information about the peoples of the world.

I'd like to balance this huge reference with stories about and by the people of other cultures ... ah, yet another reading list to seek out!

What do others use for learning about the people and lands of the world?

Sounds like a GREAT geography resource, Dawn~ Thanks!

To anyone looking for it, be careful, because there's an older DK Geography of the World that is no longer in print, but could confuse you if trying to find it in your library for instance.

The new one looks like this:
DK Geo of the World

The old one looks like this:
old DK Geo of the World

My library doesn't carry the new version, only the old one. But I just may buy this one sometime.

One fun resource we use each week is Earthweek. It comes in our local paper on Monday but the website has a PDF version to print. It includes the natural and man-made environmental events from around the world from the past week.

We read it at dinner, using world map placemats for the kids to find the countries. Younger children can review their continents this way. Keep your atlas nearby to look up more information about an interesting story. It's fun to keep track of the hottest and coldest temps each week.

One resource that comes in handy for this activity is Earth: Mini Guide by Popular Science. It's just a small "field" guide that I picked up for a couple of dollars.

Another great resource is Catholic Relief Services Kid's Page.

Fr. Albert Nevins wrote several books about different regions and children of other lands. They're probably out-of-date but might just be adventure or missionary stories.

Wow! When I clicked that link to see what the new one looked like I realized it was the book I picked up at the library for $1 two weeks ago. It was on the sale cart because there are two pages torn out. I have to agree it looks like a great book.
