Hi,
We are plugging away at LC1 but I am finding that my son is having a hard time keeping all of the declensions/conjugations/grammar etc. all straight. He has a hard time with any names at the best of times so this stuff is really hard. He remembers the vocab and can do all of the excercises no problem. I thought maybe I should slow down, but the translation (even the bit I download off of Latin for Beginners) doesn't seem to be a problem, and he has all of the declensions and conjugations down pat in the recitation but just gets sort of jumbled over questions like "do we conjugate nouns or verbs??"
(His younger sister finds all of it a breeze but I don't really want her to move to far forward as this is the spot we are at in Math to.... however, that is a post in itself!!)
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Kristie in snowy Winnipeg

I'm guessing Latina Christiana 1 and editing the subject line, so...if I'm wrong please set me straight.

Kristie,
I wish I could be of help but truth is I could have written your post. A friend who is now using LCII says not to worry, it will all click eventually. I guess I'm not that comfortable with that though. The biggest problem for us, I believe, is that I have no latin knowledge at all so we trudge through, and my understanding isn't much better than ds's. I'm hoping you get some good answers!

I am using LC1 with my girls, ages 8 and 9. We are doing a sort of coop with 5 other children in the same age range--basically we teach our own children the lesson, then on Friday they get together for an hour to take the test and do a "Roman" project together. Moms take turns hosting and leading.
This has worked great for us. The children look forward to Latin because of the social aspect, and the quizzes give us accountability. They are starting to recognize Latin roots in some English words. (Not lots, but enough to give me hope. . . .)
That said, I think we will repeat LC1 next year. They have been doing okay memorizing the vocabulary and conjugations, but we haven't even attempted to put it all together. Hopefully next year they'll feel a little surer with the vocab and will be more confident with the grammar.
Sounds like your son is way ahead of my daughters!

Hmm, I'm not sure how to answer this. My son learns and memorises like he breathes.
We did half of LC1 before he lost interest. We redid that half the following year, well, in fact we did 1/4 before he lost interest again. So this year I moved him up to LC2, trusting his memory skills.
LC2 is where the meat is. There's nothing other than lists and chants in LC1, and your child may have problems memorizing something that's basically senseless to him. "Putting it all together" really really helps, but that happens in LC2.

Thanks so much for the reply about LC2 Cleo. That is quite refreshing. Yes, it seems like when it doesn't have an immediate use and is tending towards being abstract, that this guy doesn't grasp it well.
We will check out LC2 soon as we are nearing the end of the first book.
Thanks,
Kristie (in very cold Winnipeg...hoping spring is just around the corner)

In case you need flashcards, I made some for my kids...
Flashcards for Latina Christiana I Verbs
They're PDF files. I've made the nouns, etc. also but have to upload them.

How old is your son, also?
We used LCI last year for 4th grade and still just did pretty much vocab memorization. We will be doing it again this coming year and focusing more on the translation exercises.
One mom told me she posted the Latin chant charts in the bathroom for her kids to study while they were, um,,,a captive audience...

I agree with what others are saying.
The way we ended up doing it was to just use the LC Quia drills. My boys would spend a few minutes a day drilling these. I counted it as Latin and root word study, and it really has paid off simply in English root word and spelling awareness.
With the younger of the boys (age 11 now), we would use the LC grammar teachings and take turns making up short sentences similar to the ones given in the workbook. That seems more developmentally useful to me than memorizing declension and conjugation charts in the abstract.
The older of the boys (14 now) moved from the LC vocabulary drills to Henle 1. He knows the vocabulary well, so he can focus on the grammar, which Henle teaches very thoroughly.
My littlies just learn Latin prayers.

Well, we stuck with it and now we are just about done LC1. They know the vocab quite well and my dd10 has the grammar down (she also memorises like she breathes)- it is actually me they are leaving in the dust!!
Next year (after summer) I am not sure what we will move onto- I think my dd could use some more meat, and they have both enjoyed the Latin. Right now it is finances...as in I don't have a book budget right now. So I have been looking for Henle 1 used as it seems like it would be good for us, and we could start it slowly.
I have also used Latin for Beginners by O'Dodge (I think thats his name) at Textkit a little. It is not so straight forward- has anyone else had a look at this? It's free online so we have done a little in it
My littles also learn the Latin Prayers Willa , by osmosis!
