Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am a lover of Math but I have always hated those boring ol' (important!) basic Math facts. I find the memorization of the fact plain old boring and so do the children. Any suggestions?

We just bought Quarter Mile Math a few months ago and my kids really like it. They compete against their own time by solving math facts in a racing game. I also recently ordred some fun board games from this site. There's so much to choose from, it's almost overwhelming.

Julie -- I too hate Math Facts -- I can still remember having to memorize 0-12 multiplication tables in 3rd grade. The teacher had a chart on the door and you'd get a star if you could get through them. One boy was openly ridiculed becuase he just couldn't get them -- couldn't go on some field trip or other becuase he didn't have enough stars. And, this was a Catholic school!

I've always remembered Tom R. (his mom pulled him out soon after) -- I was horrified that a teacher could be so mean, even to a boy!

I second Katherine's suggestions -- games, games, games. Get them playing "Fish" but have them add or subtract the cards to get the match. You can do this with "War" also. "Rummikub" and "Shut the Box" (in many variations) are also great.

I'm of the play don't say (math facts) is a much better way to go -- even if it takes longer......

We really love the computer game Timez Attack. There is a downloadable free trial version (which is actually a complete game in itself) that we liked so much we went ahead and bought the full version. And we don't do computer games much at all! Ds likes it so much it actually serves as a "treat" for when he finishes other work!
Timez Attack
I highly recommend it as it is actually a fun game in spite of being educational!

My kids have a blast with multiplication and division war. Mary, what are Rummikub and Shut the Box?
