Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Let me preface this post by saying I am NOT a "math person". However, The Colossal Book of Mathematics by Martin Gardner is one of those books that could make even me interested in math. It delves into all things math-y -- algebra, geometry, probability, game theory, etc -- in a fun way. This book would be a good reference for your shelf or a great read for high schoolers interested in math oddities -- have you ever seen a Klein Bottle (it has no inside or outside and thus no volume), MCEscher's work or tesselations? That's the kind of stuff Gardner has in his book. He scatters throughout limericks and silly poems written by famous mathematicians as well as professional poets.

It seems to be oop, but it really would be worth a borrowing from the library!

Our used copy came the other day, Mary. Thanks! I will look through it, and figure out how to use it with our kids during the Christmas break. Thanks again!
