Hi Ladies!

We have been using Making Math Meaningful for a few years now and my dd is doing really well with it. She's in 5th grade now and does most of it independently. She has alot of trouble understanding math concepts and this curriculum has really helped with that.

Now, my third grade twin boys are struggling with it. MMM relies heavily on word problems and since their reading is still such an effort, it takes forever to do the problems. I feel like I'm doing it for them sometimes. What's hard is knowing that for them, if I were to present the problem in a straightforward way (335+441=?) they would have no problem doing it.

My dh was helping one of my sons yesterday and himself got so frustrated trying to teach it, that he finally "ok'd" me to try something else. But now I don't know what to choose!

I'd like a math program that didn't take too long to complete (CM friendly), that doesn't require alot of teacher time, and that the kids could write in. I think it would be too tedious for the boys to have to copy problems AND work them.

As a side note, has anyone used Mastering Essential Math Skills as a stand alone curriculum? It doesn't begin till 4th grade but I think it looks great for the future. It is advertised as a supplement though.

Thank you again for all your valuable help!

Have you looked at Math U See? If the kids watch the DVDs with you, it doesn't require much teacher time. It is very CM friendly.

Here are some threads about Math U See:

Did you post this question on the Ambleside message board too? I think I responded to you there (and recommended Math U See).

Glad to know there are other Catholic moms on Ambleside. Wasn't there a Catholic Ambleside message board at one time?

God Bless,

Has anybody ever used Horizons math or MCP math? What about Simply Numbers or Ray's Arithmetic? What about Rod and Staff? I know some of these require copying the problems, although I did hear of someone allowing their children to write in the textbook, but it didn't look like there would be enough room.

I also saw Developmental Math and Mastering Math Essentials (which is more for 4th grade, but I'd like to hear from anyone using that).

THanks again!

We have used develpmental math (I forget which level) when I needed extra practice work on multiplication for ds. We liked it as it was thorough without being overkill. Very basic, no frills, and inexpensive.

We used Horizons-it didn't work for us. Too much drill, repetition, workbook pages. I have second grade if you want it. It has a teachers guide with suggestions for games to play and lessons to do. It has a student book for the kids to write in. The workbook pages are in color(a need for us)and they do have some "games" like dot to dots and crossword puzzles.
We are using Shiller and it has been a very positive experience. Short lessons, fun(most days), very few worksheets with facts. I just bought kit2 and it seems to allow the kids more independence. Kit 1 you need to sit with them and read a script(if you so desire-I usually wing it and come close)
Need to feed hungry children.

We used MCP when we first started homeschooling. I didn't use it for long because each chapter was an island unto itself. It would teach a new concept and once the chapter was over, the children didn't get a chance for the constant review that they need.

Ana,

I just got Math & Nonfiction by Marilyn Burns and I LOVE it! It is a collection of fun, innovative math lessons based on nonfiction books. I would say it is very CM, as it applies numbers to real life problems...but not in a contrived way. Ds is going to love it. Its by no means a comprehensive math curriculum, but you guys may like it to mix things up a bit. I recommend the resources on the Marilyn Burns site. Her style of teaching math is just wonderful, and extremely concept/quality oriented as opposed to worksheet/quantity oriented. If you'd like to see a sample lesson from Math & Nonfiction, PM me!

Oh, thank you for sharing, Shawna! I am so tempted to get the Math and Literature series from the website above.
