Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi,

My friend came to me with this problem since I am a math geek, but since I don't know anything about the different curriculums, I couldn't help her. I am hoping that you wonderful ladies can.

Her 4th grader started with Saxon 4/5 this school year and is now halfway through the book. He was really bored so they just started working the tests and he has only missed 5 questions so far. So, he is going to finish this book way before the year ends, even if his current pace slows considerably. She is looking for something else for him. I suggested the next level, but she doesn't think that Saxon is right for him. He seems to be strong in math and the repitition of Saxon just isn't welcomed. Any suggestions for her?

Thanks!

Beth

I was going to say Singapore Math too.. I believe there's either placement tests or samples of the info at this site.

If she would like to stick with Saxon, they also have an On-line Placement Exam.

Some people who do not like Saxon but want a standard tb like Horizon Math. I have heard that it tends to be for the more advanced mathematically and much less repetition than Saxon. I haven't used it myself so cannot speak for it, but it would be another place to look.

Beth, you can use Saxon without the repetition by just doing the Practice sets, not the exercises. If you need to spot check, the exercise problems are labeled by chapter. Plus, you could use the exercises as Quarterly tests...

I often say that John Saxon must roll over in his grave due to the way I have used Saxon, but it works!
