Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Ok, Ladies, I need some help. We used ABeka Math 2 and 3 for 2nd and 3rd grade math. While it had a lot of drill we found it very thorough and avoided burnout by only completing selected problems. In planning for 4 grade I see that so many people (including MODG) switch to Saxon 5/4. I know that Saxon is well regarded for the upper grades and that one wants to flow into that earlier rather than later. With this in mind coupled with the great sale at Book Peddler, I purchased Saxon 5/4. Reviewing the sequence and scope it appears to be behind Abeka. Many of the topics (double-digit multiplication) that we covered in AB3 are not introduced until Lesson 100! I like that there are fewer lessons and that it would not be nearly as difficult, but I wonder about going backwards. I also noticed that the student has to copy out all their problems while AB4 is still a workbook. This is an issue with my dd who HATES to write. Saxon is well regarded and I already have the books, but I am wavering and would really welcome advice from those of you who have used Saxon in the upper grades.

Thanks!

YIC,

Marjorie

Saxon's newer versions are now workbook at least through 6/5 - a big plus at our house as fine motor skills tend to lag here for a few more years than average. We could not use Saxon 5/4 with our dc that was ready for it because of the copying and are thrilled with Singapore for him but stayed with Saxon for the older boy and daughter.

I would simply do a placement test and peruse topics. If you see any concept you haven't covered yet - then include that in your assignments. Otherwise begin where the child tests. Saxon has on-line placement tests. We did this with ours and skipped to 8/7 rather quickly (after I did a few concepts in 5/4 that we felt needed a bit more coverage). We haven't had a problem with this. If something stumps them as you are working on it - then see what the concept is and be sure to explain the whys as well as how to and you can take it a bit slowly assuming this is new. You should be fine doing this.
