OK - confession - I do like Saxon. Plus is worked for my older 2. BUT - I must face the fact that right now it doesn't work for my 6th grader. Last year we got to about lesson 81 in saxon (doing about 2 lessons of math each week in the summer as reivew). So, something about saxon is not working - he gets alot wrong. I think it is the way they word and present things. So, what is a good 6th grade math text for a kids slightly behind, that explains thing well . . .

I am considering ABEKA and plan to look online to see some of my other choices too. . .

Oh - I also want something that is spiral like saxon. I know my ds NEEDs review with each lesson. So far I see ABEKA and horizons?

You might check out Math-u-See.. it may not be exactly spiral but it might also be different enough that it will click with your son and he'll need less review because he'll "get it".

Teaching Textbooks is spiral, too. I know most people either love it or hate it. We love it.

My two boys are strong in math and both enjoy TT. I also have a friend, though, whose daughter really struggles in math who has benefitted from TT, too.

There are sample lessons and placement tests on the web site.
