Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi There!

We are stalled in math lately. My almost 10 yr old has dyslexia and a very hard time remembering any math facts, even addition. She can work out the problems eventually, but she can't seem to memorize facts. Well, she's still working through 3rd grade math. We have used MUS, Rod and Staff, Teaching Textbooks, and now Life of Fred. We just started the third book in Life of Fred and she really likes it, but I fear, without continual practice, she will lose the little math that she does know.

After researching, it seems like Mastering Mathematics would help her truly learn her math facts and how to do math. I ordered it, though we have spent so much money already. I'm willing to use whatever she needs and whatever would help. I don't have a whole lot of teaching time as I have 4 other children, including a needy toddler, and we work alot on reading. I ordered MM from Rainbow and it is back-ordered. Then yesterday, she picked up her old TT Math 3 work book and decided to work through it again, where she left off. She doesn't do the multiplication, but makes the problem a big addition problem. But she is enjoying it.

Now I'm wondering what we should do? Continue with LoF and use TT on the side? Or should we do LoF with MM to make sure she's really getting it? I'm trying to discern if this back-order is a providence of God (maybe we don't really need it?) or time to rethink all this? Any advice would be so helpful.

Blessings,

Betty

I have a dd with dyslexia as well! One question: it is just the facts she is having a hard time with, like her times tables? Is she better with the concepts? I only ask this because my dd is gifted in math and doing fab at a dual credit course at our university, but is appaling at the instant recall facts...

Betty, can you provide a link to where you ordered Mastering Mathematics? I did a search and found way too much so perhaps you could narrow it down for me.

Thank you!!!

She not only has trouble with memorizing math facts but also knowing how to solve a problem (like which steps are required).

I first tried to order through Rainbow Resource but they are back ordered. I was able to find it used on homeschoolclassifieds.com

After thinking about and reading over at Amongst Lovely Things and her issues with TT, which is they can get through the lessons without really learning--and there is a way around it if you are on top of it, I decided to go with Mastering Mathematics and continuing with Life of Fred and doing some math games. We might re-visit TT in the future as we see some progress. I'd love any ideas though if you have a similar child.

One thing you may want to try with Teaching Textbooks that works for us is setting up a second account within your child's TT program. We set up a second account called "Review" and what we do is after our son finishes a chapter, we go back and redo problems that he struggled with or needs more practice.

I really like TT but I do agree that it's kinda hard to see a kid get a perfect score on a quiz and not having the concepts mastered. I think since TT allows 2 tries on most problems it doesn't totally reflect what the student has mastered.

BUT . . . TT has been the most "tear free" program we have used. And for us, that is a blessing.

Yes, TT has been a blessing in our home too. "Tear free" math is such a blessing.

My daughter has been a little different. I think once we hammer down some of the issues and make sure she's learned how to do math, we will return to TT. In the meantime, I'm going to let her continue in her TT and finish out Math 3 (she's supposed to be in 4th grade by the world's standards) on her own. We've been using TT for so long, the next grade we already own is Math 6, I believe. Maybe that will be a good time to revisit it?

My older 3 are still using TT and doing well with it and have for a few years now. My 9yod has been the first one to have these struggles/challenges.
