Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I really want to add math games and (maybe) manipulatives to our home school. This has been a failure of mine when my kids were younger. They do play online games, but I want something else to add. I thought they were too old now, but maybe not? I have the RightStart math games book and I hate it. It's confusing to me. I know a lot of people like this book, but I just don't understand it.

I do want an actual resource to try and make math more interesting for my boys. Something beyond the text. If I'm given a list of ideas it may not happen because I don't have something physical to refer to. Yet, I'm not excluding that because were are short on funds to purchase any more books in the near future.

Any ideas?

Cassie,
you have the RS card game book but you didn't mention the actual cards. Do you not have those? It would be very hard to play the games with out the sets of cards.

If you do have the card sets and want some help understanding how to play the games, I would be happy to walk you through them. PM me if you are interested.

It's the reading of directions. I can't read directions and understand them unless they are short and sweet and/or lots of pictures. I always have my dh read directions and then tell me how to do it. I don't know why, but this is how my mind works when it comes to games. The RS card games is one of the worse for me.

Yes, I have all the cards.

I have quite a few math games on my blog, mostly using playing cards or dice:

I agree with you about the RS card games--the instructions are really difficult for me to understand!    I usually get out the cards and then read through the directions with my kids while we try out the game; once we all understand it, I leave them to it. I have been thinking about writing the rules to our most-played games in my own simplified format and wording on index cards so that the kids (or I) could grab the card and go. I never remember how many of each number I'm supposed to get out for this game, or how many cards we're supposed to have in our hand for this one...etc.

That said, once we get playing, I really do like the games. Some of them are very clever, and they are really good math-facts practice.

Okay, I understand. What may help is to narrow down your choices. Maybe only learn two or three games per topic you are trying to cover. For example. I would only focus on multiplication for now. Choose 2 games from the book, multiplication memory(p3) and find the two factors (p29).( here the p does not mean page but product) have your dh read the directions and play the game with you. Then you will know how to play the game. If it would be helpful, you could write the directions in a way that makes sense to you and store it in a notebook.

For your kids ages, i would make sure to understand the corners game. That is really a fun one.

Denise has a ton of games too so you could do the same and choose two of them for variety.

I think what makes RS games book hard is that there are so many choices put into a small area. It may help to just deal with a few at a time.

Sorry, cross posting with Celeste. I bet it would help if RS would put the instructions on laminated cardstock. One game per page and store them in a file box.
