Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My youngest will finish RightStart level C in May. This was a new program for us this year. This has been the best program we have ever used and it is going great for him. I really could have started him in level D. The problem is that I'm dreading having to teach level D again! Even though RightStart is working I hate the set-up of the teacher's manual and sometimes the lessons have me scratching my head. I've just been going with it so far. I also hate all the drawing and we have been skipping those lessons. I really don't want to teach level D again. In reality, this has been a good year in math for my boys and there isn't money in the budget to buy a whole new program. I also know we will get behind if I don't make some changes because I won't want to teach it. Any suggestions? Maybe something to supplement so that I don't have to use RightStart every day (and we can skip lessons in RightStart). I will still be using the program with my oldest too, but teaching two just drives me over the edge.

I'm sorry I can't advise, but I sure can relate! The plans just don't translate well in my head even though I love the content. Most of it seems like the wording & layout of the teacher's edition. I am anxiously awaiting the second editions, but IDK when the higher levels you need will be published.

I think choosing curriculum is always a sort of compromise; you, as the homeschooling parent, have to be comfortable enough to use it *and* it has to be some sort of decent fit with the child. If you really hate using the curriculum that much... I'd spend some time investigating other options, but I wouldn't pull the trigger right away. Give it time to percolate. You may decide after sifting through the possibilities that although you don't really like what you've got, it may still be the best thing going for your family.

I find it easier the second time around. You can be a little more laid back about it. I can just skim the instructions usually and not get bogged down in the details. After a bit of a break, you may find it isn't as bad as you immagine.

When I get tired of teaching math (I think I would no matter the company), i have Code Breakers from MindWare and Mind Benders from The Critical Thinking Company that I hand my kids. After giving them an example of how to solve the puzzles, they are on their own to wrestle with it. Then I go do something I want to do. Usually, I take a week off . Then I am good to go

I guess it hasn't bothered me as much, just that I know it takes longer and we go our own pace.

I was wondering if the new versions of RS will change D much.

It just doesn't look as if the higher levels will be available anytime soon.

I'll be starting Level D with my two oldest in the fall and you all have me wondering what I'm in for!    Is Level D a lot different from the previous levels?

This was our first year with this program, so I've only seen C & D.

Nah- it's a lot the same as far as format goes. We are just wrapping up Level D here. It finishes with a good stretch of drawing with the drawing tools, though. I still think Level B was the meatiest and toughest to get through.

I have been using Miquon to supplement RS. We usually do a half a lesson to a whole lesson in RS and then 1 sheet of Miquon. However, on days when I just don't want to teach RS, I don't feel bad because we can do a sheet or two of Miquon. Maybe you could also do something like Math Mammoth or Singapore Math (even just the Challenging Word Problems or something) for days when you just don't want to mess with RS. Plus, the kids get some extra practice.

We are nearing the end of Level D with my second child this semester. Her interest in math has been less focused than the first daughter, but we were slow and steady with it and she is coming through with a really good handle on Math. I've been very pleased with the program. My oldest daughter is wrapping up Geometry. That has been a great program. It's getting more difficult for her to do it all on her own so I am helping. I think she has 13 lessons left.
I do know that RS requires mom help, but I feel like it's been all worth it. We don't necessarily finish a lesson in one day, but in our CM style we do 20-30 minutes 4 days a week and make much progress at concepts.
(I also am teaching Level C and B this year...)

I wanted to thank everyone for all the wonderful support and ideas. I've put a lot of thought and prayer into this problem. Math has been a problem since my oldest was in third grade. Right now I think the problem is all me. I still need to put some major time towards prayer on this because I'm lost for next year. Currently I have put RightStart aside for both my boys. I had Mathematical Reasoning books for each boys for extra practice and we are using those now. I ordered Life of Fred and will start that as soon as it arrives (today!). I also ordered some Key to books for my oldest. I will make math plans for next year after we finish this year. I really don't know what direction we will go.
