Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Anyone here use TT? My 9YO is very good at Math (tested about 2 grades ahead when he left PS last year), is currently using Saxon 7/6, and really doesn't like it. Every day is a battle. He can do the work, but it is way too boring for him.

What about TT? Any other recommendations? He's a good self-learner, unless it requires a lot of reading. (Hence part of the frustration with Saxon).

My children all love TT. The lessons are "lectures with words." Then they have to do 20-25 problems in addition 5 practice type problems. Each lesson has reviews of previous lessons. I have my 4 children fighting to do math most days, even my struggling learner.

You can go to the TT site and look at the sample lessons and see if you son is interested in it. You can also have him take a placement test so that you can get him the correct level of math.

I know some say that it isn't "rigorous" enough, but I have a math teacher friend that loves it and thinks it is a great program.

I really like TT for the upper grades. I haven't seen the younger levels but imagine that they are much the same. In elementary school I tend to supplement any math program with lots of extra books and games regardless of curriculum. I think at that age this is especially invaluable at helping them enjoy math while learning and reinforcing too. There are lots of book and game suggestions in old threads here.

He'd love it.

Would probably test way higher than his grade level on it. My 9yo is an average math kid and just started TT4 which is pretty easy for him.

Check out Khan Academy for supplemental math... might even be able to build a whole program out of it.

Well, that's it. I ordered. I had my DS do a few of the sample lessons and his face lit up. I think he started to remember how much he really enjoys math. I looked and looked for used CDs at a good price, but couldn't find any. (That's usually another good indication that a program is well-liked.)

He tested at TT7. He absolutely can't wait for it to come in the mail.

I feel so much relief that we aren't going to be struggling to push through Saxon anymore. I know it is a quality program - there's no doubt about that - it just wasn't working for him. (Makes me think about the one-size-fits-all programs in public schools. It's no wonder my mother is struggling to teach math to the 6th graders at the local middle school).

Thanks for all of your suggestions.

my 10yo (who dislikes math, but is good at it) "tolerates" it (I think she like it, but will never ADMIT it)

Should've given her a good dose of Saxon first. Then she would have loved TT.

(My almost 6YO is the one who never admits that he likes anything. Funny kids.)

My 9YO has had it for almost a week now and LOVES it. It's the first thing he does in the morning, now.

So far, so good!

My 9-yo was saying she hated math towards the end of last year (we were using Right Start go figure), so I thought we needed a change of pace. TT's fabulous and she loves Math again! (I think it was more the mommy factor in our case )

My DS (who hates MCP and Saxon Math) has a love/hate relationship with TT. He is working through TT3 and I think he's bored. I know he wants to get to the multiplication section. We just got the Life of Fred Elementary books and he is devouring those right now and reading lots of other living math books instead of TT. I am hoping he goes back to TT in a little bit. I think he is just getting his motivation up to push through.

I let my kids "test out of" chapters in the lower grades of TT. I find Math textbooks extremely repetitive, (I know I know, repetition is the cornerstone of learning . . .) and I see no need to do the chapter if the child already "gets" the material. So if I know they are bored and have covered addition with 3 digits, for example, for three years already, I skip to the chapter test. You have to be careful doing this with the higher grade of TT, because sometimes they introduce a method or vocabulary for doing something that will be referred to later and if you skip it . . . you have to backtrack (experience speaking ).
