Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Most of my children are behind in math due to a crazy few years with not enough scheduled math time. While the older set is on track to catch up this year, I'm wondering what to do with my new 3rd grader.

She completed Math U See Alpha and will start Beta. This seems too far behind. She is bright, so it's been more an issue of just not doing math often enough (like every day!). I'm wondering what we've been doing these past few years!

A few questions:

Do you begin Alpha in Kindergarten?

I would like to go really fast through Beta and get her to Gamma - what do you think about that? It's basically subtraction. Maybe supplement with a few timed-tests?

We didn't do a math curriculum until my son was 8. We started then with Beta, since he pretty much (but not perfectly) knew his addition facts. 2 years later, we're now starting Epsilon. I don't require that my son does all the workbook pages, just as many as he needs to understand the material, so our pace varies greatly. Gamma was slow, because it took a longer time and more practice to learn the multiplication facts, but we flew through Delta since division facts are just the reverse of what he already knew. The online drills were very helpful when memorizing facts - my son enjoyed them, and liked trying to beat his time.

Anyway, that was our experience!

Thank you, Tracy. I did want to check out the online drills. I haven't used them yet for any of the children.

I'm not all that worried about being "behind" in the early years, but I'd like them to be at a certain place, or near a certain place, by junior high. It has taken me years to realize this, thus my olders playing a little a catch up at the moment. :)

I tested my children through these books. Some of my children needed to do every lesson and others moved quicker.

I would introduce the lesson, have them do a page and then test them on it. If they do well on the test, move them on to the next lesson.

This seemed to work well for my family.

Hope that helps!
