Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We have been doing Singapore math and we are nearing the end. We are in book 6B. Ds will be 8th grade in a few weeks and I struggle with whether he is ready for algebra or needs prealgebra.
In perusing Setons site I noticed they have an algebra readiness test. Then, I was looking at the BJU test booklet and noticed Iowa puts out an algebra readiness test also. They are both around $20 and take aobut 1 hour. I think this will help me make my decision.
Just sharing information....

Some programs also have placement tests online.. for instance Teaching Textbooks.. to help you decide on algebra or pre-algebra.

I wish the math programs I am looking at had placement tests. I am toying with ChalkDust (highly likely) or continuing with Singapore(not likely-I need to spend more time with the little one).
This transition is so hard. It was easy to just keep ordering Sing 2A, 2B, 3A, 3B.......now it ends I don't want to waste money buying PreAlg or get Algebra and stress him out.

yep.. we're probably going with teaching textbooks for just that reason.. it's very much something the student can do on their own with plenty of teaching through the program.

I was just thinking that even if it's not a program you're using the free placement tests could give you a pretty good idea where he's at without the extra cost.

Jacob's Algebra is great because it eases in slowly and doesn't make any grand assumptions about what your child has studied before. We did it over two years (with a math savvy 11 year old and a math hesitant 8th grader). Neither did Pre- Algebra and they both did great in the course! (And enjoyed it to boot)
