Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We are using McRuffy Color Math K. We absolutely love it. It is a solid program that uses tons of manipulatives and DS5 is really learning a lot. He almost knocked my MIL to the floor when he pointed to something in her house and said, "Why do you have a trapezoid in the living room?" My original plan was to use McRuffy for K-3 (they are planning more levels, but I wasn't planning on using them). In 4th, I was planning on switching to Saxon 5/4 because by then I might be enrolled in Kolbe and that is what they use.

I hear a lot about Singapore. I love the samples online and their philosophy in math. However, I do worry about using it because it is a completely different way to teach math than what I am used to. I almost feel like it is a fad. People are excited about how well Singpore children do on the tests, but I think a lot of that has to do with their culture and the emphasis placed on math.

We are a very mathy family. DS5 wants to be an astronaut.      I know things can change, but I really see him going into a field that requires a strong foundation in math. He is really good at math so I see this as being a strong subject for him. I would love to hear what you all think about Saxon or Singapore. I am going to stick with McRuffy for K and then decide for next year.

I encourage you to look into RightStart. There are reasons why Asian countries do well in math and they are easily transferable to American or any other nationality children. If you read the research on the RS website, you see what I am talking about. You will find it under "resources", "program information" and then "research summary".

I have been teaching math for five years with RS and could not be happier. It appeals to me as a non math person and to my husband who is an engineer.
