Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My ds, has just finished Saxon 8/7. When we do Algebra, I would like to do Algebra 1 and 2 in succession. So...I am thinking that I will do Geometry next year. Ds loves math and picks it up quickly. What programs have you used? Do you recommend it? What were the strong points? What were the program's weaknesses?

Thanks,
Jess

I have no opinions but I am all ears. After a year of attempting Algebra 1, we are going to take a break and come back to it later (along with Algebra II). So I guess this year we'll be doing geometry, too.

For part of his studies, he's going to be using the Living Math lesson plans. My ds isn't so keen on math but likes history.

We just finished up Math-U-See geometry. After having already completed Alg I and II, ds found it to be ridiculously easy. He never even had to watch a single lecture from the DVD's.

I haven't seen Math U See's geometry, but I liked their elementary math -- good at explaining in concrete ways IMO. We used Teaching Textbooks Geometry -- also very good at explaining concepts and proofs and giving examples. My son was able to follow the lessons in the book without my help or a dvd explanation. I liked that TT had a good foundation in proofs. What our local high school uses does not emphasize proofs at all.

Janette- Thanks for letting me know that TT does proofs. It is important to me that whatever program he does has a good foundation on proofs.

Theresa- Do you think MUS Geometry would have been too easy after Algebra I? Does MUS do proofs?

Thanks,
Jess

Honestly I think MUS Geometry is too light on the proofs, and really very light overall.
I went this route with ds because he was burned out on math and needed a less challenging year to get back on his feet. And MUS was definitely on the light side.

In making my decision I actually compared MUS and Teaching textbooks side-by-side and TT was definitely the more thorough of the two. I was really impressed by it, and in any other circumstances I would have chosen TT over MUS.
But, given my circumstances I decided to go with the lighter route. It was the best choice for me because ds is now ready to tackle some more challenging math. The break was good for him.
But if I had a kid who was enthusiastic about math and ready for a challenge, then I would definitely go with TT. I think it more thorough and overall a better course.
