Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'll most likely be using Miquon for math next year (if I'm able to hs). I found some cuisenaire rods that I bought a long time ago packed away in a box. I was counting them out to make sure I had enough, and for some reason or another I made little marks on all of them when I bought them. Not sure how to describe it but they are little hatch marks... the white cube doesn't have one but the rest have a tick for each "unit." Does this make any sense? I guess I was trying to make it easier to see what number the rod represents. Anyway, I was just wondering if I needed to buy a new set since I messed these up... or does it matter?

When we use them we have the children play with them first so they can start to memorize what number each color represents. Please DM me if you think you need another set. I have a large set and I am trying to unload a lot of my home schooling items!

I can't see where it would make much difference.

I find this interesting because I think that the fact you put marks on the rods indicates that it isn't intuitive to memorize color = number.

An Activities for Learning Abacus on the otherhand is intuitive because when you see 5 blue beads and 3 yellow beads together you can "see" right away that it is 8. and when that row of 8 is added to 5 blue and 2 yellow it is easy to see three groups of 5 =15.

I haven't ever used Miquon but if you are happy with it, you might want to see if an abacus (10 rows of 10 beads divided by color at 5's and 50 like at www.alabacus.com) could be used instead of the cuisenaire rods.

If you just want to keep what you have, I'd use the ones that you marked off so the units can be seen.

Good luck,
Aagot
