Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am looking for a fun math program that has manipulatives for my Kindergartener. I was thinking of something along the lines of http://www.movingwithmath.com/products/connections/, but without the huge expense. It also has to be gentle (not overwhelming) and maybe colorful.
Does anyone know of guide for the parent that can teach math that is more manipulative based?
I hope that makes sense.
I have looked at a few common math programs. But since my son has issues with fine motor, I want to be able to start him with manipulatives while I work with his fine motor. Then as he gets better move him onto something more traditonal.

Well, just use manipulatives you have and a fun math program that you can use the manipulatives with.

We use legos or dry pinto beans or torn pieces of construction paper.. whatever when we need manipulatives.

The math program I like is Singapore Math. The kindgergarten books are rather more hands on and you do need to provide your own things but most often they are things that you have around anyway.

But even into higher level books if someone needs a good hands on visual.. out come paper plates and pinto beans (the paper plates with the pintos are great for teaching multiplication and division).

And for some high motivation (as a novelty) some m&m's the you get to eat after doing the math is fun.

Math-U-See uses a lot of manipulatives and isn't too expensive. The teacher's manual and DVDs (I haven't watched them but have heard) explain the manipulative use. And I'm with Jodie. You can buy the manipulatives from them or use legos. I do like MUS's blocks because they are bigger than legos and cuisenaire rods. My kids use the MUS blocks to build all kinds of structures and buildings when they're not using them for math.

I have not found anything better and more engaging than Right Start Math. Their Level A is such a joy to teach with and very gentle. We really like the games and manipulatives. their web site: www.alabacus.com

Best wishes,

I am using McRuffy Color Math for kindergarten next year. It comes with tons of manipulatives to use and it looks really fun for the kids. I am also going to supplement with Miquon (which uses Cuisenaire rods). That is supposed to be a really fun math program. It is very inexpensive and you could probably just do that if you wanted to!

We used Shiller Math when ds was young. It was fun. You do need to do some drill of math facts and follow up of lessons at times. Oh, and skip some, too!    We still listen to the CD's with dd.
