Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Are you looking for living math suggestions?

I'm just popping this thread for some suggestions. Some might do for middle school.

I forget if MacBeth's Opinions was included in the above mentioned thread, but lots of ideas here, too.

Don't know how I missed this...

Jenn's links have some great books. Some specific books from that list that we've enjoyed with older kids:

Mathematics A Human Endeavor by Harold Jacobs. It is a textbook, but for general math. We've used it for fun.

A Gebra Named Al by Wendy Isdell

The Dot and the Line and The Phantom Tollbooth, both by Norton Juster

The Number Devil by Hans Magnus Enzensberger

The Massachusetts state website for educators has a list of living math book by grade (to match the "standards" of course) that go through 8th grade. The list is here. Scroll down to the Connecting Math and Literature section.

Not a book, but helpful for adding to the Book of Centuries - Timeline of Mathematicians.
