Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Ds and I (because I am learning with him ) are struggling with the models for word problems in US 4A. We kind of skipped them in previous books as the problems were easier and we didn't need to see things.
Now, we really do. The problems are multistep and to be honest, I read the problem and am at a loss as to what to even start with.
Math is not my strong suit.
Does anyone have any ideas to help me help him (and me)learn this valuable skill. I can see this helping him with SAT's and getting algebra later on. These were the problems I had no idea how to solve in high school
So, I am hoping to take a week and just do these type of problems starting pretty easy and working up. I did go through the level 3 books but those are so easy it seems a waste to "draw" them.
Anyone?? Ideas?

The best way to learn these is to start by modeling the problems that are simple. You do not need the model to solve them, but you need the problems to learn how to use the models.

I explained several examples on my blog. I haven't gotten around to doing 4th grade problems, yet, but I've written tips on how those simpler problems build up the foundations:
Pre-Algebra Problem Solving: The Tools
Pre-Algebra Problem Solving: 2nd Grade
Pre-Algebra Problem Solving: 3rd Grade

Denise,
This is awesome! I think I will be doing a lot of reading and we will be working on the computer next week with Thinking Blocks.
Thank you soooo much!

Just wanted to update this and note the change in technology there are now "app's" for the iPad for number bonds, addition and subtraction and also multiplication and division. Only 1.99 each. It will be our summer math!
