We are at a standstill with division.
Presently,we are using MUS.
My goal is not to abandon the program,(maybe I need to switch programs, but not now--watching dd#2 blossom in high school math thanks to to manipulative based math background I am reluctant to change) just take a break, learn to divide and more forward.
Although we use the blocks, and follow the same steps Brigid has no idea of what we are doing. The jump to 2 digit divisors has show just how lost she is.
I believe she understands the concept of what division is because she can work word problems well, actually she can set them up, doing the division remains as the problem.
Any suggestions for a division program, book or website?
Thanks

Is it possible that she is having trouble with place value? One of our dc hit a wall like that and we put aside the division and spent a short mini-review of place value - then went back to division making sure that she understood the division in context of place value (keeping very consistent vocabulary to indicate place value all the way throughout). That got her over the hump - hope that helps. We had done the whole MUS but somehow she hadn't connected the place value to the division. Also we did write out as we were doing the manipulatives rather than after the fact which seemed to help.

Many kids seem to find division hard.
Sometimes, the children just need extra practice of the algorithms.
Sometimes, they need time - move on to other mathematical areas and then re-visit division again later. It sometimes just clicks!
This site has a Stamp Game
for teaching division.
HTH!

Viv, I don't have any web sites or programs to offer, but I do have a few suggestions that worked here. And it took a long time with my 12 year old, but it worked in the end--yesterday --she got "it" and she remembered it all today , and even asked for two more problems after she was done! This was a great day in a very long struggle, and I hope the lessons I learned during the struggle are helpful to you.
When demonstrating, use a big board, like a chalk board or white board (I ended up using the back of a monthly calendar) and make it really BIG.
Narrate what you are doing for every step, and have her repeat the steps.
when she is working out her own problems, have her use graph paper and keep the digits in the squares.
Give problems that come out even (no remainder!!) until the algorithm is learned.
Make sure she knows all the division facts really well, and the multiplication facts, too.
Keep it CM simple...just a few problems daily.

Thanks-
Much better this week.
Found a workbook on the weekend which breaks down the steps just as I have in the past.
Slow repetition, review the steps, 20 minute math lessons ,and using the timer seems to help. Thank you for your imput. KNowing I am not alone in this effort helps too.
Have used graph paper for math for quite a few years, wish I had when I was youndger.
When I taught elementary school I had the students turn their lined paper sideways, holes to the top, to line up the numbers.

I've been lurking here to read the suggestions. I really like the graph paper idea. So simple, but I know it will really help my special guy. Maybe the 20 minute limit too. After that I know that I really get frustrated.
Great ideas!

Comment heard from dd#3 today after our 20 minutes of division:
"Now that I know how to do it, division is kind of fun. .... Never thought I would be saying that"
Who could have guessed!

Nothing fancy, from B&N School Zone , Multiplication and Division, An I Know It Book
It could have been simple problems I gave her but the book worked where my pages didn't.

We switched to graph paper for all of Jeanne's math a few months ago and what a difference it has made! Aside from her work being much neater, it keeps her place values where they belong. I highly recommend this suggestion.
