What do you like for first grade math? I just bought Seton's first grade math book and was dissapointed that is was not the spiral approach where previous concepts are reviewed. Any reviews of first grade math books would be helpful. I am leaning toward keeping this and giving ds some extra review problems myself. I know it wouldn't be hard to do, it's just that with other kids to homeschool it will be one more thing I will have to do!
Thanks for the help!
Barb
I forgot to say this year we used horizons and he just didn't like it.

We used Abeka Math this year for our first grader and loved it. In the past we have used Math u See too, but for this child Abeka worked better (it's in color )
Did you buy Seton's new Math program or MCP math? My best friend used Seton's new Math this past year and she said the same about it and is switching to something else for this coming year.
If you want any specifics I would be glad to give them to you

I found this article by Cathy Duffy enormously helpful when planning first grade math. I haven't used any texts yet, so I'm no help reviewing those. But working with math in a very natural way has been extremely successful here. I refer to Ruth Beechick's 3 R's to make sure we're getting everything covered. First grade math is very simple and basic- it's quite easy to do it without a text.
Not to complicate your decision-making, of course. Just sharing what works for us.

I will be teaching my 6th first grader next year. We have had success with ABeka, Singapore and my newest favorite, Miquon. My Ker is doing the first Miquon book this year and is really making connections that surprise me..
But Sarah is right, it can be done simply and without a text. I like to have something to follow, just to keep me on task.

I have to support Abeka on this one.
I didn't use it this year because my teacher-aunt (who taught first grade for over 20 years) gave me some free, very colorful workbooks they use in the schools.
It was all basic math so I figured it'd be "good enough" and I could save a few dollars.
Along w/ our Montessori manipulatives we made it through the first year and I thought we were doing well and Annie was pretty good in math.
Until...
Last week at co-op, I was assigned an hour in the nursery and, while holding a baby on my lap , I listened in on a conversation between my 1st grader and her buddy (elementary didn't have classes that day), another 1st grader. He was doing his math...Abeka...and was breezing through it. He was much better and swifter at it than my Annie.
We should have used Abeka.
So I looked at Seton's math books at a recent conference but I'm going w/ Abeka for 2nd grade.

We also are very happy with Abeka--I have used it for all my k-4th graders--and have been very happy with the progress they have all made with it.

Another vote for Abeka. I will have a K'er next year and I'm wondering if I should try the Abeka K program. I don't want to do anything too heavy, but this ds isn't interested in Math like his brothers were so I can't decide if i should just wait for 1st grade, or start preparing him now.
