Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hello,

I'm really new here and I don't have experience with a lot of this but I found this list of books in our paper today as a guide for kids to continue learning math over the summer but in a fun way as opposed to worksheets. I'm always looking for ideas to engage my children in math outside of worksheets, so although I can't personally recommend them yet, I thought I would pass it on. Just from the little tidbits of info the writer supplied made them interesting enough to check out and pass on. Hopefully it's ok to refer without personally using them yet. ?

A Million Dots by Andrew Clements 2006 ages 7-10: visually shows a million with colorful, dancing letters

Math Curse by Jon Scieska 1995ages 6-10: number crunching picture book

Sir Cumference and the Round Table by Cindy Neuschwander 1997 ages 8-12: spoof of Camelot discusses shapes (parallel-ograms, triangles, octagons and diamonds), concepts of diameter, radius and circumference; apparently several other math adventure books

Math-terpieces: The Art of Problem-Solving ages 5-10: intro to art history, kids add items visually instead of numerically, practice addition, find solutions to the challenge in a poem accompanying art piece.

For teens: the 2 books below didn't really sound like something I would seek out based on the info she provided but may be because my kids are so young.

An Abundance of Katherines by John Green 2006: Colin has just graduated and is dumped by his girlfriend and dates only girls named Katherine and devises a theory that he hopes will predict his future with the girls (see?) But it goes on about how he goes on this road trip and provides an extensive index with a full explanation of the math Collin discusses.

A Higher Geometry by Sharelle Byars Moranville 2006: post-WWII American gal excels in trig but her parents don't want her to study math and then she meets a boy who excels at art and tries to balance it all; higher math concepts discussed, including Pythagorean theorem and she shows some of her work during math test.

Hope this helps someone else.
