Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Can someone point me towards a hands on manipulative for long division? One of my sons has been "doing" long division for 2 years now, but still needs me to remind him how to do it before he gets started. So, I think he needs something to help him "see" what is going on. I've been trying to read through this:

montessori long division

but I'm having trouble understanding it.

Thanks!

I don't see anything on there except sheets for multiplication facts in stacks. I'm computer challenged so maybe I'm missing part of the link. Is it possible that they are trying to arrange things by place value? I know that is how MUS helped students see long division. For a long time my children grouped hundreds, tens, etc. and then added all the units in like place value. Eventually they noticed the pattern and started doing the shortcut without the steps specifically being taught.

For instance, if they were dividing 1264 by 12, they would divide 12 into 1,200 recognizing the first 2 digits as the thousands and hundreds place. The answer, it goes 100 times, would be written on the top, followed by subtracting from the original number. You are left with 64. Does 12 go into 6 tens, etc. In the end they would add 100, 50 with 4 left over. Of course the first ones we did always came out even. They eventually caught (some right away, some after some repetition the longer way) that all the putting stuff down, subtracting and bringing the next number down are just fancy shortcuts for keeping up with place value. It also helps them see why having columns lined up, bringing down numbers at the right time, etc. are so important.

Don't know if this helps for the Montessori materials but hopefully it will be at least another way to show the division to help them see.

long division

Perhaps this will work better...there are pgs to scroll through. I think this is similar to what you're explaining Janet, but they use beads. I remember someone linking montessori online videos...I'm going to see what I can find.
