My daughter will be doing TT pre-Algebra next year. I am getting ready to order. I have a question - is everything done on the computer or is there some book work. How do you keep track of progress? Do I need to buy all the cds, books etc

There are cds that the student listens to with each lesson. I LOVE them!
Then they do their daily lesson copying from the textbook...a practice set of about 5 problems and then a problem set of 22 problems. Solutions are found in the "answer key and test bank". If your child does not understand one of the problems, he can pop in the cd and watch the solution being worked out and explained.
There is also a test booklet that contains a test for each chapter. Again, the solutions for the tests are in the "answer key and test bank" and solutions on test are also explained clearly on the test cd.

How to keep track of progress?
Your child can use the CD completely without the book, though I've heard the book comes in handy for reference purposes.
I bought the books but we haven't used them...yet.
At any time I can go into their CD and click on the gradebook. Up pops all the lessons they've done and what they scored on it in percentages. Then you can click to the test scores and see what they scored on tests.
Easy as that. 
My friend Linda assured me that you can tell when your child isn't listening to the explanations. Their test scores will start to slip.

As long as they listen to the lecture and do the practice problems, they tend to do well on the lessons. And if they do well ont he lessons, they tend to do well on the tests.
It builds upon itself.

My dd uses it differently. She reads the lesson in the book and work out all the problems. Then she goes to the CD only for those she has missed (if any). If she doesn't understand a concept then she uses the CD. It has worked for her. She has done Algebra I, Geometry and is getting ready to do Algebra II.

My son listened to and watched the Pre-Alg. CDs for each lesson and then did the work using the book. We rarely brought out the solution CDs, as we required that he rework the problems on his own. We tracked progress on our own via the paper trail of assignments and tests.
You don't have to buy it all, but we're glad we did.

I'm confused. After looking at TT website and reading the review in Timberdoodle, I thought that for pre-algebra you needed both the textbook and the CD's. The CD's contained the lectures and solutions, but the actual lesson is in the textbook. I don't see a price for just purchasing the CD's.
For 7th gr. and down it appears you can use just the CD's without the textbook/workbook.
Am I reading something wrong?

No, you're correct. I was speaking about Grade 5 and 7. I should have noted that Marilyn asked about Pre-Aleg. My bad. 
I put off buying TT because of the price. When I finally got it, after Christmas, the plan was for my 8th grader to do Grade 7 until May (to beef his brain up  ) and then to do Pre-Alge over the summer.
He did fine through June (still finishing Gr. 7). Then he stopped.  So just this week I encouraged him to "Let's get back on task!" and do one lesson a day.
We're a little behind.
But, what the others wrote is correct. My friend Linda also told me you don't really need the books in the younger grades but the upper grades are different.

Thank you, Cay. I got all excited for a moment thinking maybe I would just have to purchase the CD's. Right now is not the best time for me to be spending that kind of money on one math program, so I got my hopes up. Oh well.
I am heartened by all the wonderful reviews it has received.
