Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm getting ready to order Saxon 5/4 for my dd to start in March, and I keep going back and forth on the DIVE cd. I've heard it recommended, but I'm still not exactly sure what it is. Is the idea behind DIVE to replace the parent? I know 5/4 is going to be different from 3--if I don't get DIVE, can I expect the lessons to take about the same amount of "mom" time?

Thanks!

it helped, in our case. for some reason my dd went through a period where she didn't "enjoy" the way i taught her math, and at that time it was good to have a third party tell her what to do. basically what the CD does is show your child step-by-step on a blackboard (it's like a blackboard on your computer with someone invisible writing on it!) what should be done to solve a problem. every lesson is covered, so let's say your child is doing lesson 32, then she clicks on lesson 32, and she is basically taught the lesson as if she were sitting in a classroom listening to/watching the teacher. she can watch over and over until she gets it.

caveat emptor: at the beginning of the CD the author discusses his spiritual belief and invites you to profess your faith for Jesus Christ, similar to "born-again" invitations I've received. we simply skipped that part of the CD. oh, and i did receive some unsolicited e-mail from the author as well re faith matters, which i ignored.

hth,

Stef described them well, and also the caveat emptor. Yes, just skip that part, it's easy to do, but good for you to know it's there.

We've used DIVE CD Roms now for 3 years I guess. For the higher math, it's a TREASURE for me! What a BLESSING! I am not good at math, and by the time they wait for Dad who is (and they do use dad too), it's later, and we're busy, etc.

My auditory learner is helped a TON by these, PLUS my visual learner also is helped as well.

Our oldest is in Saxon Algebra 2, and our middle son is in Saxon 76. So I don't even have to deal much with math with either of them, other than to keep them in check, and be sure they're *getting it*.

Our youngest is in Saxon 54 this year, and I bought the DIVE CD Rom, because she complains about everything she does (we're working on attitude this year). But she HATED it! I think she was used to doing math with me, and she hated listening to the DIVE teacher. So I told her that if she didn't listen to me, and didn't do math the way I expected, she'd have to use the CD Rom instead, because I wasn't about to deal with her bad attitude anymore. It worked!!!! Now I bought the CD Rom for nothing, but it's sellable!

So now I'm not sure if I'm going to buy the Saxon 65 with her or not yet. She will eventually have to go to a more independent way of learning with math, and other subjects, but she's definitely WAY more hands on, so the DIVE may not be as good of a fit for her, we'll see.

Anyway, they have been a HUGE help with my older students, and not a hit with my hands on youngest, who decided mom wasn't so bad of a math teacher after all!

I bought the DIVE cd for my 6th grade daughter this year. She really enjoyed it in the beginning, but now refuses to use it. This was due to the material getting harder. It frustrated her when she didn't understand something on the cd. I would then have to go over the lesson anyway. This was making math a very long subject everyday.

My son grasps the math concepts much easier, so I hope he will use it next year.

That's my concern, Jeanne. I love Saxon, but it can be time consuming. Of course I will spend the time it takes (with my Jeanne ) to learn the lesson, but I'm hoping the DIVE cd will free a little time for me. I very quickly went from just one child old enough for seat work to three, plus the two littles, so I'm trying to figure out how to manage my time better. I'm anxious for my Saxon package to arrive!

Molly I hope it works well for you. When my daughter was using it, it did free up my time. I understand totally about trying to manage time better. That is a daily concern for me also. I now have 4 school age and 2 little ones(plus meals, cleaning, husband etc.). Ok now I'm overwhelmed just thinking about it. I better go and make sure everyone is working on their Saxon.

We started the DIVE this week with 5/4. Jeanne and I both really like it. The beginning lessons are all review, so it's good to develop the habit of attention with this new format before new information is introduced. Jeanne has been my Saxon kid--right up her alley and mine--and this just falls right into place with that. I've given her some guidance since it's all new, but this looks like something she will really embrace. Plus, I think it's fun for her to have a little independence and good for me to let go a little .

Resurrecting this thread...
Molly, what's your final word on the cd? I'm getting ready to purchase 5/4 for my ds (after a fairly lax year ). I'm leaning toward getting the cd, but still waffling a bit. I'd love to hear how it worked out in the end for you!

Thanks!

Tracy, I beg to differ with you. That CD Rom is a great tool to motivate your daughter to adjust her attitude. I think it was worth every penny!

The DIVE 5/4 CD was definitely worth every penny. My dd used it for most of the lessons and it really suited us both--it freed me from the teaching time and Jeanne learned to work independently. I'm seeing the fruits of that this year with Saxon 6/5. I bought the CD, but she is able to read the lesson on her own and needs only minimal help. We rarely use the CD. I do attribute her independence in math this year to the DIVE CD last year. I'm still happy to own the 6/5 CD because Jeanne is the oldest of 6 so far, and sooner or later someone else will use it.

On another note, isn't it funny how when we change our signature lines it changes on all of our old posts as well? My posts above, from two years ago, are welcoming baby Veronica who is only 7 months old tomorrow? Weird...

Thanks for this. I just bought the DIVE cd for my daughter for Algebra 1 which she will be starting in the Fall. I thought it was a big expense but I think she and I are ready for that "independence" you are talking about. She did Algebra 1/2 this year and really could have used a little more help than I was able to give her.

Tina,
That's an EXCELLENT way to look at it, thank you! Come to think of it, she really has changed in terms of her attitude toward doing math, is no longer defiant, and though still hates math (and I can't blame her, so do I), she's doing pretty well to try her best, and learn it in spite of that hate.

I'm trying to make her understand that when we're faced with really difficult challenges, it's best to face them head on, and though we may not be really really good at it, we can take pride in knowing we're doing our best to face that challenge with a good attitude.

Yes, I guess that IS worth every penny!!!! Thanks for that reminder!

Maybe this should be another thread, but has anyone compared the 2nd and 3rd editions of Saxon 54? I'm going to get the DIVE cd, but I'm wondering if it's worth paying the extra $$ for the new edition?

Also, does anyone know why Saxon doesn't sell the DIVE cd's on their website?

We have used the cd for the first time this past year (for 5/4.) It worked great for ds. For those things that he didn't "get" from the cd, I was able to show him how very simply and easily, since he had already previewed the cd.

I have just been buying the cd edition to match the book edition. I thought there was some difference in the book editions? Sorry I can't help you with this question!

Now I have to go and order the 6/5 cd! Thanks for the reminder!

God Bless,

Because they are not published by Saxon, but by an independent person/company. Saxon does not endorse them as far as I know, but does acknowledge their helpfulness, if that makes sense.

That said, my ds didn't care for them but then we both did not like Saxon the one year (8/7) we tried it. This year we are using TEaching TExtbooks and I hesitated over getting the DVD's with it since he had not liked the DIVE lessons (he always says he prefers me to teach it) but he is using these more. Some lessons he can just read the book but it's nice to have the back-up of the DVD's.
