Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I've used MCP for all of my children K - 4th without problems until now.
Then we switched to Saxon and hated it.
So I'm going to use Life of Fred for my oldest 2 boys.
I'll see if Saxon is what my 3rd boys needs. (otherwise I'll have to switch him to something for 5th grade)
I'll stick with the MCP becasue that's working for boy #4 (4th grade) and the oldest girl (2nd grade).

But MCP is totally not working for dc #6 (a boy) K/1st. He's spent a year loving math, but going so vvvveeeeeerrrrryy slow that he's only half way through the book. It's just hard for him to grasp and harder for it to stick with MCP.

I really can't afford MUS (primer set would be $117!), so I'm considering Miquon. Opinions? Pros/cons?

What do you go to after finishing Miquon? Straight to algebra? The key to fractions and decimals? Or what?

I want something that encourages self-learning. IOW I don't mind helping him a bit when he needs it, but I cannot sit and work on it with him for an hour every day, kwim?

Thanks!

Try Math Mammoth.    It's reasonably priced, self-learning, and thorough. Just a suggestion. For us, Miquon jumped around too much, I like focusing and perfecting one skill at a time rather than a little of each skill. The author has a lot of interesting articles on teaching math that you can find on her website.

I hope it helps,
Christine

hmmm ... a 6th possibility...
I really don't want a download or DVD based program. Every single time I've gotten something like that my computer has crashed or the thing got scratched or something else happened and education in the subject came to a complete halt. We're book people at this point.

We've used Mastering Math from Mastery Publications. I think I paid $100 for the entire set - it goes to 8th grade. I've never used anything else, so I can't compare it, but the kids like it.
