Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I just want to THANK YOU to those who suggested the Life of Fred Math her on this forum. With my husband's blessing, we decided to depart from Saxon for now for her, and try this, because her struggles in math were beginning to be a difficulty for her.

She now LOVES Math, and LOVES doing Life of Fred! She thinks the author is a genius, and she looks forward to doing Math now, EVEN when he challenges her to THINK!

I just want to thank you, because I would have never known about them. The author has been extremely helpful when we had questions when ordering, etc., and even tried calling me (looking UP our phone #), just to be give us the answers to our questions. (He ended up emailing, but I thought it was so nice of him)!

Anyway, thanks again. We're still in the experimental phase with using this, but so far, so good, and she seems to be understanding her math much better!!!!

God bless!
Tracy

Oh, Tracy I'm so glad. My now-16yod was really struggling with Saxon Algebra (basically flagging the course ) but I gave her LoF and it clicked and now as a junior, she's in pre-calculus honors! I think LoF is such a gentle, wonderful approach ... and as you say, the author, Stanley Schmidt, just wants kids to love math too!

Give your daughter an extra hug from your 4real friends!

I've been wondering if someone would comment on this again. It looked very interesting for my 12 yo. son. The sense of humor reminded me of him! Personally I thought the sample was hilarious! Is ALL of the book this funny? Do you feel like the coverage is "comprehensive but balanced" (i.e., covering everything but not doing it to death so it becomes boring). I have another question--probably the most important question--is it easy for a kid to use who has 2 absolute math dummies for parents??!! I really need a good, clear solutions guide that makes sense even to me . . . !

Angela,

(rejoining the forum after a really, really busy semester. . .) Yes, it's funny. Some kids like that; some would rather just have the math facts (I have some of each!). The most difficult thing is that we're still finding typos in his books - and some have been out for quite awhile. That can be difficult if you feel weak in math. (He does correct the typos as he's made aware of them.)

We just got the decimal one. DD loved the previous book and completed it in about a month, but she had already done Key to Fractions as part of her curriculum last year. (My husband and I were just not sure she was ready to start algebra so we went deeper this year with the Fred books and only problem solving.)

It is great for my kid who is not much older than Fred, to see that even though Fred is great at math he doesn't have the experience or knowledge in certain life situations to stay out of trouble.

I read it too. Math was never my favorite subject, and it told me WHY we do certain things.
