Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Does anyone have a resource they like to use as a reference for teaching consumer-type math? I'm talking about things like figuring out the best price in a grocery store, balancing a checkbook, working out a tip in a restaurant and things like that.

I know how to do all that stuff, but I seem totally incompetent in explaining it to my son, especially since my husband tells me that when I do math like that in my head I do it in ways that are totally counter-intuitive to him. What I mean to say is, my husband doesn't understand my method when I try to explain it to him, either (but he doesn't want take the time to do the teaching his way).

I was hoping to find a book that has how "most people" solve problems like that--or maybe even multiple ways to work the same kind of problem.

I don't know of a text to use as a spine but Barnes and Noble University have a course on Every Day Maths for Every Day Life. Perhaps you and your ds can do this course together?

I found this site on Consumer Math for grades K-8. It looks like it covers some of the things you want to discuss with your son.

We used Consumer Math by A Beka. It covers buying a car, travel, budgeting, income, food, taxes, banking, investments, housing and the small business. My daughter really did well with it and felt that it explained the topics very clearly.

It covers each topic that you mention in your post and is taught from a Christian perspective.

I haven't used it, but I was on the Math U See web site last week and saw that they have a brand new consumer math program, along with the Christian principles that apply. Its called the Stewardship program, and you can download the scope and sequence for free to see if it covers what you want.

hope this helps!
