Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

my son (4.5 yo) has been very interested in money lately. wanting to buy things, playing store, etc. two questions for you ladies-
do you "teach" money at this age, or just play store many times and count out coins together? this is complicated a bit by the fact that we live in romania and the money is different.
also, when (if you do) do you start giving out allowance? what is appropriate for a young child to be responsible for in order to earn allowance?
thanks for your help

Monica, I will speak to the issue of teaching/learning money at the age of 4.5. One thing we have always done is give our children a piggy bank at birth. As they collect coins, they plink them into the bank. Then when interested, in your case 4.5, we dump out the coins and start learning the names and value of coins. I teach them to put them into piles of $1.00. For example, 4 quarters in a pile = $1.00. Gradually, they just get money. Two of my children dumped the coins out daily for about a month and we counted out the amount of money.

Now for allowance. We do not start giving our children an allowance until they can do their morning routine without being told, reminded, nagged about it. The morning routine includes: get dressed, make bed, eat breakfast, brush teeth and one additional rotating morning chore (feed animals, collect laundry or fold socks). Once they can do these things in the morning in a reasonable amount of time after waking, we feel they are ready to earn an allowance and be given additional responsibilities. We give our kids dollars equal to their age each month. Our 9 year old daughter receives $9 each month as allowance.
