I am planning for dd next year. I want to start her with a math program that uses manipulatives and isn't too intensive (I am a better late than early type). I LOVED Miquon for my older kids(it has been a long time) but I keep hearing such good things about MUS and I like the idea that I can use the same program all the way up. Honestly though, my only exposure to it has been the Algebra 2 that my older dd used for about a month and did not like at all. So, I am wary.
Has anyone used both programs recently at the lower levels and can compare the two?

Hey Theresa,
I posted my opinion on the MUS vs. Cuisenaire Rods thread. Miquon was not a good fit for our family. I admit to finding MUS really appealing, especially for some concepts that my older kids are struggling with. If you haven't done so already, order their free demo DVD.

I second Valerie's suggestion to get the free demo DVD - it presents extremely well, the main concepts from the youngest years right through, using the manipulatives.

Hi, Theresa. We used Miquon with dd (9) until just recently. She was in the last book but started to get frustrated. I sensed she didn't truly have some of the concepts. I started her in Gamma and she loves it! My ds (almost 7) had been in the same Miquon book (the second one) for a looong time and really wasn't clicking with it at all. He's really the one that gave me the impetus to switch. He really likes it, too and seems to be getting the concept behind the process. One other good thing about MUS is that there are several pages of practice. Sometimes we only do a couple and they don't need more. Sometimes they need them all. With Miquon, I didn't feel there was enough practice on some concepts. Although Miquon is much cheaper, I know in the long run my ds will be better off with MUS and have a better understanding. Hope this helps your decision making!

My math-phobic daughter is now using MUS. We were in Singapore before that. Now she laughs when we do math. But we're just at the beginning, learning and thinking about math facts. MUS is not cheap though. In fact, I find it quite overpriced 
But to hear my daughter laugh, and to see her eyes shine, it's all worth it.

Yeah, but if you compare MUS with everything to, say, Saxon's kit of worktext, facts and test booklet, and TM and/or DIVE CD (not including manipulatives), it really isn't that bad. And it seems to me (this, based solely on perusing the website and watching the demo DVD, LOL), that there is far more
practice of a single concept in MUS before moving onto the next thing, something which Saxon doesn't provide enough of for some students (namely MINE).
Can you tell I'm on the verge of making a purchase???

Well I'm used to Singapore Math, less than 50$ per year. And Défi Math, a Quebec program, about 15$ per year.
So yeah, MUS hurt my wallet.
I never checked Saxon, I despise it. It would have killed the love of math that I have, that my son has. I think it's a math killer... But that's my opinion...
