Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My daughter just finished "Stories with a View" from Hillside Education. She absolutely loved it and wrote some wonderful pieces! Can anyone recommend "where" to go next? We do a lot of narration, but I am looking for something that is self-directed. This child loves to write and to be challenged. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Maria,

I see that no one has responded, and I'm wondering if it's just due to an unfamiliarity with "Stories with a View"?

I'm sorry! I'm never much help with these threads, because I rarely use formal writing programs.

I haven't seen "Stories with a View" myself, but just looked at Hillside's website. Would their "Frost on the Window Pane" be something that would work? You could follow it just for the writing activities and leave out the rest (the price is certainly right as a pick-and-choose resource).

Would Lingua Mater be too advanced?

My girls (inspired by a couple of other blogging daughters from this board) love keeping up their own blogs. If you want to combine some composition with keyboarding, you can set up a private blog, give her a list of topics to blog about (or let her come up with her own) and see what happens.

I know that some people like Writing Strands and I've also heard good things about Andrew Pudewa's IEW (Institute for Excellence in Writing.)

I'd love to see more discussion about this!

Anyone used the above-mentioned resources, or have reactions to share?

The writing activities in "Frost on the Windowpane" are tied to a reading of the book Little House in the Big Woods, so they wouldn't make much sense on their own, I don't think.

Anyone can put together their own Stories with a View!! If she likes that style and you don't want to start something new on the "downside" of the year, you can find art prints and poem, one each week, and print them out for her. I found all the paintings for SWV at Art Resource. Although you can't use the images there to sell them or post them on the Internet without paying a license fee, you can print them out to have your dd look at them. I had an old poem book that I used for most of the poems . . . so you could pick up a poetry book at the library.

I do not recommend Lingua Mater until the child is 12, or is in 6th grade at least. IEW might be a good choice.
