We finished up Ancient Egypt today. We ended our study by doing the activiteis in the Ancient Egypt Treasure Chest. I asked Anne-Catherine (7) to tell me what she learned about Ancient Egypt. Here it is:
Egypt
by Anne-Catherine
There is a place called Egypt in North Africa. I am going to tell you about ancient Egypt. The ancient Egyptians believed in gods and goddesses. The Nile flooded every year. It brought good, rich mud. The farmers prayed to Hapy for a good flood. There was the sun god, Ra, and Osiris, the god of the dead. Isis was the wife of Osiris and mother of Horus. There were many other gods. Some of the gods were evil. Some of the gods were good. All the gods were not the One True God. The ancient Egyptians ate fruit and sometimes meat. They also ate grain. They drank water and maybe even goat milk. The Egyptians made paper called papyrus from reeds. They smashed the reeds into pulp and smoothed it with a stone and then you had papyrus. The most fabulous thing about Egypt is the mummies. Mummy making took a long time. When someone dies, all the parts inside were taken out. The inside parts were put into jars called canopic jars. The Egyptians believed that when someone dies, two things called a ba and a ka left the person. They came back to the person when he was finally in his sarcophagus. Scientists have found mummies all over Egypt. The Egyptians made the pyramids. They were fantastic. The pyramids were for the mummy of the king. More kings were buried in the Valley of the Kings, where tomb robbers could not get in. There was once a king who died when he was just eighteen. The king was called the pharaoh. There was a Sphinx. I would like to climb on the Sphinx. Maybe if I traveled to Egypt I could.
The End.
I'm very proud of her!!

Great job!
Somehow my 9 yr old ventured into ancient Egypt this week. It wasn't in the "plans" so I'm scratching up any Egypt books we have around the house...which is quite a bit actually.

That is an excellent narration! We are studying Egypt this year as well and although we are really new to narration, I don't think my 8 year old ds remembers that much.

That is one of the reasons I'm so proud of her-I really didn't think she was paying attention!! She can't sit still and listen-she needs to be dancing, drawing, or standing on her head. So I let her move while I read aloud which just didn't seem right. (Students should be able to sit still and listen, right?) But she retained what she heard!!

I just started doing Egypt with my 13dd. I'll have to have her read this. Maybe it will inspire her to write down her narrations.

Jennifer,
My son Jonathan has some attention problems and so I let him draw. You would think it would hinder their ability to concentrate but it actually does the opposite. Allowing him to draw something keeps him listening and focused. If he wasn't drawing he would be looking around for things to distract him.
