I posted about this on my blog today -- see how many of these 100 you've read and what you think. I personally think I've read as many as I have because I homeschool!

Mary,
I have read 74 of the 100. The majority I have liked. I noticed you didn't like The Giving Tree. I am glad to know I wasn't the only one who didn't like it.

Fun list,

Natalia

Mary,

Interesting list, a mix of picture and chapter books. I was surprised to only come under the 50s. Now if you had asked how many have I got and not yet read. I'm going to get dd to have a look, I know there are many there that I haven't read and she has.

Erin, I only made it to 47. I think quite a number of the books are only widely available in the US, which puts us at a disadvantage

I've read 94 of them. And I have to admit that it has only something to do with my having kids -- I have read many of them on my own as an adult.

Dd13 just had a look at the list and she only made it to 36, I was 42. Now both of us are voracious readers and we didn't make it halfway

Can you find an English list? I bet I've read many English books. I'm going to see if I can find an Australian list and see how you all go

Mary
How did you go about finding this list?

I had 84 out of 100. I have to say that some I haven't read because after skimming them, I decided not to (Like Lilly and the Purple Purse). What is the source for the list?

I'm not sure where this list came from -- I'm guessing the ALA due to the ones that are ON this list vs the ones that AREN'T! I got the list from some blogs I read about kids lit -- A Chair, A Fireplace and a Tea Cozy as well as Kids Lit.

I think this is like any list that purports to be "the best of".....it's only as good as the person making the list!

I came in at 56. I have specifically stayed away from Roald Dahl, to date, so that left me at a slight disadvantage Many others of the books we have, just haven't read them yet (like "The Secret Garden and "Where the Red Fern Grows")
A couple that stuck out in my mind was "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day" by Judith Viorst which I did NOT like. I think I actually donated my copy.
I love "The Giving Tree," but pretty much nothing else by Shel Silverstein.
Interesting list, though, Mary. Thanks for posting it!

I'm at a record-breakingly feeble 36! Again, I blame it on the US-biased selection.

I'm interested to see that there's some strong anti-Roald Dahl feeling out there -- just preference, or is there some subliminal dodgy message that I've been ignoring? (If it's the language, I do tone it down sometimes when reading aloud but on the other hand I do like earthy-but-clean language!)

Elizabeth,

I think it's just that Dahl was oversold to me when I was little -- seems like we had something of his read aloud a couple of time a year for a few years ... I think he tends to dwell on the negative and more maudlin side of life, especially in books like "James", "Matilda" and "Charlie" ... this is one of the reasons I think it might be an ALA (American Library Assoc) list as they are notorious for pushing Dahl and Silverstein.....

It's a great exercise in validity of Book Lists though, isn't it....

I've read 78 of them.
Interesting list. I don't think there is any way one could argue that these are "the best" of childrens lit. I do think, however, one could make the arguement that many are "must reads" from a cultural literacy standpoint. How else do you explain Amelia Bedelia, Boxcar Children, Clifford, and Alexander on the list. Don't get me wrong, I LIKE all of those, but high quality literature they are not.
Polar Express, btw, is my one exception to the book being better than the movie. Loved the movie, thought the book was lame.
