first - can anyone tell me if they preferred the Hillside updated version of PLL? or if they preffered the original instead and why? (My visual inclined self, is leaning towards Hillside just for the colors, but is aware that is not the primary purpose of writing materials! )

then..

How would Lingua Mater compare/contrast with PLL?

Could someone describe how they use either of these across several grade levels?

Do you need grammar, spelling, phonics, & handwriting with these or are those covered while using these?

I don't have any way of seeing these in person, so I'm having a hard time picturing them.

I prefer Hillside. The color is nice, there are some Catholic references, and I'd rather support Margot . You would use PLL before Lingua Mater. Lingua Mater is much more advanced.

They are great for grammar and writing. You need something else for spelling and handwriting and phonics.
I'd use PLL in around 3rd grade, give or take a year and I'd use Lingua Mater in 6th and/or 7th grade...

Lingua Mater comes after ILL. I'm using Margot's PLL for my 2nd and special needs 5th graders. I might take 2 years to go through it with my 2nd grader. Then you would use ILL. The book says to use it for 4,5,6th grades. I think Mother of Divine Grace uses it for 2 years.
Lingua Mater is written as a 2 year 6th and 7th grade course or a one year 7th grade course. I'm using it with my 7th grader (we're about 4 days in) and he really likes it. When we used a workbook format he could figure out the pattern of answering without understanding the concept. Now he really has to show he gets the concept taught in the lesson. I think that Margot is working on a text for 8th grade, that may be out next year? Check out her blog:Hillside Education

Just for my clarification...

first - Hillside's PLL for lower elementary (which is a color version of the original w/ additions - NOT less than the original - correct?)

second - original ILL for mid to upper elementary(which Hillside does not have a version of yet? correct?)

third - Lingua Mater (middle-ish years)

Btw, I have Stories w/a View and love the beauty of it. (We use it about twice a week with my K and 2nd graders.) My dh is concerned that the higher materials won't be "meaty" enough though.

FWIW, my oldest is using Lingua Mater for 7th grade. We are 7 days into our school year. I am impressed by it, and I think she likes it quite a bit. We did not use PLL or ILL before this, so I can't comment on those or how they fit with Lingua Mater.

Okay, some more questions here...
How do you do these over multiple ages on a daily basis?
Do you have a set language arts time allotted where everyone sits down and you go over their lessons?
Do you set individual times for each child?
Do you give them the book and just go over it when they are done? (I'm thinking not on that last?)

I must say that if these work as well as hoped, I'm very excited over the prospect of not having seperate spelling, grammar, writing, and handwriting.

Now, my only worry is not having the neccessary one-to-one time these seem to require? Or is it easier than it appears?

I am doing the Stories with a View for my 3rd grader, because since I do still have the remainder of my Seton materials - this seems to fill the writing gap for him. I'll probably transistion to PLL after that.

Then I have 5th and 6th graders, which I'm thinking of using the LM with over 2 years, rather than 1. So here's another question. My dh says if it's recommended for 7th and I think the boys can do it now at a slower degree - He wonders does this mean Seton has been working better than we realise or does it mean LM is just very easy for typical 7th grade or does it mean nothing at all about either?

Personally, I'm leaning towards it means nothing. Seton has been great and I doubt I'll ever completely stop using them for that reason. But they also have a very heavy workload because the language arts subject is so divided up into sub-subjects. I'm not against that if there is benefit, and they are above grade level, so there can be a benefit. I'm leaning towards changing this for 2 reasons. My kids are starting to hate writing (which just kills me!). And if I can get the same high academic achievement without the high work load - well that's just smart and efficient!
