This year I am going to use Intermediate Language Lessons with my 5th grader. I am going to use it this year and next year (for 5th and 6th grades)--4 days a week. I am really liking the look of how this program works. Can this program stand alone for grammar and writing? I am still going to have him do Spelling, Reading comprehension and Vocabulary as well.

We were with Seton last year, and my 9yo an 10yo were both overwhelmed with that program. And I knew that we needed to change our style to be able to deal with these kind of problems.

I was given CHC's 4th grade Language of God for my 9yo and I am planning on doing this with him next year as well.

I am also getting ready to use ILL with a 5th grader, intending to do half the book this year and half in 6th grade. I have never used this book before, but last year we did PLL for 4th grade. Looking over ILL, it seems to be pretty similar. Based on that, I would say it covers grammar, compostion, etc., but it does not do all of those things every week. When we used Calvert several years ago (obviously with another child), each week of 5th grade included 3 or 4 lessons in each Grammar and Composition, usually exercises from a book that had sections on each topic separately. Much of that was repetitive; do you really need to do 20 sentences identifying the verb, or whatever? Maybe some do, and that's fine. ILL, though, may give 10 sentences like that and then not mention the matter again for a few weeks, giving time for things to sink in, etc., rather than drilling so much. Personally, I prefer that and I know that sort of approach works for dd; she gets the point of things like that and acquires the skill without doing so many exercises that the subject "gets on her nerves." It may or may not be the preferred approach for all families, though.

Hi, my dd 5th grade started ILL last year and we creeped along through about 1/4 of the book. I also used Stories With a View and Simply Grammar along side it plus copywork and our own poetry memorization selections so she had a pretty well rounded LA program. I wouldn't worry too much about HOW MUCH you get through in a given year. She'll finish it this year, but I'm also not holding to EVERY single lesson. I kind of pick and choose what she needs to work on, skipping ahead if necessary! HTH.
