Is it too late to start dictation, narration, and copywork with 9 and 10 year old boys?

I have always had "a more tradional approach" to teaching my boys. I am discovering that this isn't working as well as I thought. I really want to take a couple of steps back and slow things down,iykwim. I know that dictation and narration would be a good thing for my oldest especially since he always wants to "do it as quickly as possible."

Do you have any suggestions for a mom just beginning to do these?

I don't think it is ever too late.

I would start with copywork and make it a family thing rather than a school thing. We do this with ourt journaling - I get out my notebook and journal/do copywork, too.

I think it may be a good idea to start with free choice for copywork - you make some suggestions but also be open to something they may want to copy - my sons sometimes copy a favourite quote or passage or song lyrics.

Beth, Welcome and it is never too late IMHO to start with a CM style of language arts program!! This is also a great time for them as they will be just learning to perfect or get better at their penmanship and copywork is the best tool I've found for enjoying the art of penmanship! If they are reluctant, have them pick favorite passages from the books they are currently reading, you can do this for dictation as well. Maybe wait a bit asking for written narrations until they see their work down on the keyboard for this next year. Mine love to have theirs on the computer to be printed out and then decorated for their notebooks.

I HTH and a couple of good reads on this area can be found in Elizabeth's book Real Learning and I really like the approach in Catherine Levison's Charlotte Mason Education.

I think 9 and 10 is actually a great age to start, mine never do that much till this age anyway

One idea that worked really well with ds last year was a copywork jar. I typed out alot of the LOTR rhymes for him, cut them up and placed them into the jar. For some reason the 'lucky dip' approach appealed to him. Whereas his sister preferred copying Psalms straight from the Bible.

I love the idea of a copywork lottery. I think LOTR might be too advanced for my boys, but I could try other things, verses and psalms and short rhymes. At what age, generally, are they ready for the LOTR stuff? They are pretty interested I just thought it would be over their heads or too much for them.

A friend of mine is big into the A Thomas Jefferson Education and has just started her boys on copywork (similar in age to yours).

They like Rules of Civility & Decent Behaviour In Company and Conversation by George Washington. Archaic? Yes. Good advice? Yes. Fun to read aloud on a posh voice? Yes! There are 110, print, snip and stuff in a jar for choosing every now and again. (I'm sure that you can find a modern version if you are concerned about the spellings. Google it if it interests you. That is why we are homeschooglers. Right?)
