Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

The past few months I have been considering writing programs. I was able to borrow the IEW Structure and Style seminar on dvd along with the notebook from a friend... that was such a help, as there was no cost for that and it gave me a clear picture of the program and an idea of whether it could work at my house.

My ds watched quite a bit over my shoulder, and Andrew ("that guy") intrigued him. So that was all good

Since then, I have discovered that I can buy my own seminar notebook (with all the notes) for $35. Adoremus books carries that, and I can get a 10% discount with their latest code. I have also seen the notebook for sale on eBay, Cathswap and half.com.

I am in the market to buy the Student Writing Intensive Level B.
New, that is $109. But when I searched at the IEW website in the details for that, I discovered that it includes the Structure and Style overview dvd, which I have already seen, 4 student dvds, and the student packet, which is the teacher notes, lesson plans, and student sheets.

The student packet is available as a download from IEW for only $10
Or I could buy the hard copy notebook for $19 (Adoremus has this, also... or any of the other places I mentioned).

My town has a homeschool curriculum consignment store that has opened in the past year. Oh, my- it has everything! I can buy the set of student dvds there for level B for under $50. I can also possibly buy the level B student notebook... have to check on that. But for $10, I think I might go with the download.

At the IEW website I can download and print the source material I need for my 4th grader to go along with Level B for free .

So I am very excited that I can use IEW at my house this fall for under $100, easily. It has taken some bit of research on my part to figure it all out, but I am glad I did it, since the large price tag had scared me away from IEW in the past.

I thought I would put this all out here in case anyone else has suggestions for trying IEW on the cheap or just would like to see how it can be done.

So, after you see the Teaching Structure and Style DVDs once, you don't need them again?

(I'm fairly certain I have a friend here who could loan them to me. I've never asked because I assumed they were a continually needed resource.)

I am taking notes and planning to buy the TWSS teacher's manual, so I am hoping that I won't need to refer back to the dvds, especially since I have the student dvds with Andrew in them.

But maybe those who have used the program longer can speak more from experience?

Ideally I would watch each teacher dvd again before teaching that session to my dc, but in the interest of saving a large amount of money, I am going to see how it goes this way. Also, I am going to keep a watch for a used set of the teacher dvds.

If you can, I definitely would borrow them and watch them all so you can get a feel for if the program will work for you. From watching them I can see how I can break IEW up into small daily assignments- I had been worried the program would be a huge time sink and I wouldn't be able to keep it up.

Also, even just watching once I have learned so much!

Coming back to add that I don't know that I would have tons of time in the school year to go back and revisit the teacher dvds, and I probably would have a hard time carving out a couple of hours on a weekend to watch the dvd for each session for the first time during the year.

So I am glad that I have watched them in a big batch and taken notes.

I just saw that Rainbow Resources also carries IEW materials.

They always have good deals on shipping... I think it is free for orders over $50.

I only needed to watch them once. IEW reccomends spreading it out but I watched them over the summer at a leisurely pace. Then instead of doing the SWI we did ancient history one yr and mid. Ages the next. This worked out great but would have been difficult without watching Twss.

Our library carries some IEW products, including the Student Writing Intensive A, B, and C. You can't get any cheaper than that.

You are so way lucky! My library does not have any of it ...
however, I do wonder if I could order any of it through ILL.

There is a copyright law that prevents copying any library materials, but still... just to watch the teaching dvds or to become familiar with the program, you are right- can't beat that price!

I bet I could ILL the teaching dvds if I ever really felt like I needed to watch them again.

I am glad to hear that a one time viewing could be enough, though.

And I was also glad to read on the IEW website that making copies of printed material within a family for homeschooling purposes is fine.
