Life of Fred Language Arts

I just saw that Life of Fred now has a high school language arts series. Not sure what I think about it, but we love Life of Fred math and this looks like it could make an interesting option for some families, especially as a grammar study.

Great find! I notice in the LOF books that the author has a real love of the English language. I am definitely keeping this i mind for when the time comes...

And we have a unique opening in our lesson plans and are at the end of a term...so my 8th grader is eager to give Australia a try! I'll come back and review after we become more familiar with it!

I'd be especially interested in an assessment of the true level of these language-arts books -- are they really high-school level, or would they be (equally or more) appropriate at an earlier level?

There are four books in the LA series. Are any of you planning to continue on with the series?

I haven't had a chance to really dissect this book to give a thorough review, Melinda - but we do have Australia, and my 13 ½ yo son has read it through completely. In one sitting. sigh. So, I can confirm that it possesses the same engaging quality of all LoF books.

I came away with a couple of initial impressions based on my son's quickie narration - this book, in order for it to be effective for us, needs to be a read aloud by me as part of our Morning Basket of work and then narrated/discussed/reviewed (possibly as part of our dictation lesson). This is necessary in order to isolate the key part of the lesson and still be able to narrate and enjoy those little tangent conversations that are typical as part of a Fred story. I think that this is one of those books that I'll want to prepare the lesson before I read aloud.

This book is fine for upper elementary.

We'll begin our year on July 7 so I should be able to give a better review once I start pre-reading some books, and this will be one of that I pre-read. I don't have too many pre-reads stacked up...so hopefully I can review more soon. I'm building lesson plans and Morning Basket plans this week and next.

All the books are suitable for reading of any age. I have them all, both math and language arts. They are great fun for the kids to read just to enjoy on that merit alone.

The language arts is intended for high school, which I would think by then most students would not need the teacher to pull out the specifics of the lesson for them.

I'll have to get back to you on further specifics bc I have not had my morning java yet.

I'm not sure why I never wrote back in.... Apparently I didn't get enough coffee?

I think the language arts books as stand alone grammar are more upper elementary to middle school at most. Beyond that, I think they are grand fun review or a no pressure stand alone for a kid who is really struggling. My high schoolers have thought they were amusing and finished all of the language arts books in about 2 weeks.

I put them on par with Eats, Shoots, Leaves, which I also own and have them read in 8th or 9th grade. It's an amusing way to leave a visual imprint of grammar without dumbing it down.

I like them, but not quite as much as the math books, which I think I better done. Probably because that's the authors first passion and most knowledgeable area.
