Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

OYAN on Homeschool Buyers Co-Op

This one looks so great - and my son really wants it (he's 8, not 8th grade, so I'm making him wait...). Perhaps if enough people order it, I could join too? ;) hehe

We used it this year. It really is best suited for High School. I would say 9th grade is the perfect fit.

We did it for 8th grade this past year. It was an excellent fit for a kid with basically good writing who needed to learn to extend himself and commit to a long-term project. IMO it's the perfect bridge from middle school writing (concentration on sentence/paragraph-level writing) to sustaining something longer and more intricately structured. It's also excellent for developing the student's senses as an analytical reader of fiction -- when I was a student in a graduate creative writing program, the lit profs all loved us because we read, wrote, and did criticism like writers, and this is an age-appropriate version of that same idea! We read Great Expectations and David Copperfield this past year, and my son and I had some interesting conversations about how Pip and David were/were not adventure-novel heroes, and how those novels did/did not fit that paradigm. I'm glad to have this idea in the background as we head into a year of Iliad, Odyssey, Aeneid, etc.

I like this program for an advanced middle-school, VERY early high-school student, because of the way it teaches the sustaining of ideas and the structuring of a longer piece of writing. From there it's very easy to teach structured formal writing, as in essays and research papers. I felt comfortable counting it as our composition course for 8th grade; for high school I think I'd probably count it as a creative-writing elective, though of course it really is teaching composition. Overall, though it's great on its own, I think it has serious value as a tool for transitioning into the greater demands of advanced formal writing.

I tried to get everyone I knew to order it last year from the co-op -- one of my friends wound up getting it, but the price stayed the same. It was still a good deal, and very worth it in terms of what we got out of it.
