Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hello,

My dd (5), will be starting K at home this fall. She has basically taut herself to read, and is pretty fluent...I guess at this point it's sight reding and sounding out sounds and words. I'm wondering when/if I need to do some formal phonics instruction. Would that be part of our K work, or do I let her proceed ahead and come back to it in 1st? I'd love some thoughts on this one!

I did formal phonics for kindergarten because I wanted to make sure he understood how the words could be sounded out instead of just learning them by sight. If she is already reading pretty fluently, I would try Explode the Code workbooks to review or All About Spelling if you also want to tie in spelling.

My ds taught himself to read by age 4. Well, actually I think it was the fact I read to him at least an hour a day since it was the only way to get him to sit and get rest when he really needed a nap . He also ended up being a great speller. Never did phonics with him, nor spelling. He is going to be 9th grade next year
Dd has been a late reader but is finally getting it at 9. She is an awful speller and I am finding Explode the Code to be helpful for her for that. I also like that the phonics rules are reviewed. And she likes "black and white" school--workbooks. I also have for reference, because I don't remember the phonics rules , The Ordinary Parents Guide to Teaching Reading by Jesse Wise. It helps ME.
Personally, with a K-er that is reading well I'd keep finding books for her to read, challenge some and be there for questions.
Enjoy your early reader!!!

I've never been in that situation, but I think that I would not worry too much about phonics instruction for Kindergarten if she is already reading. It sounds like she has the "basics" already. Even though she is capable, I would keep it light and fun and just work to keep her access to worthy books at her reading level and continue reading aloud for things above.

I would offer Explode the Code for her to do at her leisure if she wants to (we like Explode the Code here). Then, in first grade, I would probably have her either start it or continue it in a more formal way (a page or two a day).

Another idea might Little Stories for Little Folks by CHC. It's not too pricey and very self-paced. I would just want to make sure all the basics are covered. I know I was reading when I was 3 1/2 (at about a 2nd grade level), but I did still learn a lot going through phonics when I started school (even if most of the time I was bored because I had to wait for my classmates ;) ).
