Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My son is able to make all of his letters pretty well now so I had decided to start doing copywork. The problem is that he LOVES his handwriting workbook (Zaner-Bloser). He has done about .25 of the 1st grade book, but they are no long working on letter formation. They are basically doing really banal copywork (for today, he was supposed to write brother, uncle, sister, and aunt). I would rather him be writing something lovely if it is just copywork anyway.

Should I let him finish up this book or just insist on copywork? After a few weeks of copywork, would the complaining stop? I hate to mess with a good thing because he loves handwriting, but I am not really fond of this workbook. Is there a better workbook I could buy? I would just rather pull copywork out of the books we are reading and do Bible verses.

About a month ago, I switched my 6YO from the CHC handwriting book to handwriting pages that I make on this website. I use our Bible memory verse for the week as his copywork.

As for the complaining....well, I don't have that one figured out yet.

To me, this is your answer right here. He loves it. You will have plenty of time (years and years!) to do copywork your way once he finishes up the workbook. I'd relax and let him do what he loves.

I agree, and I'd go with the bird in hand for this one!

Same here. And typically copywork starts with single words, anyway, before you progress to sentences and passages, so why not write basic words, even if by themselves they're a little banal?

My kids have also loved those CHC handwriting books. The lessons are typically so short, though, especially in the early grades, that you can easily do both a short CHC lesson and a short copywork passage on the same day, if you desire. After struggling with this a good bit myself, because *I* adore copywork, but my kids like those workbooks, I've finally decided that it doesn't have to be an either-or thing.

Thank you guys for telling me what I already knew in my heart, but didn't want to hear.

Not sure what you decided KristinAnnie, but I just came across this in a search and my suggestion would be to alternate days. Maybe 2-3 days in the workbook for formation reinforcement and then the other 2-3 days copying a short sentence or passage with more meaning to you (and him :) ).

You could always do some supplementary work and keep up w/ what he likes. G dictates cards and letters to me and I use a penmanship worksheet generator to make the tracing pages. When he gets better, I can make them copywork, as PP mentioned. He absolutely loves using his own writing. It hardly seems like an assignment!

I "lost " the book over our break and now he does only copywork and is happy about it.
