Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My 9th grader is almost done with reading through Twelfth Night (original version, unabridged). He is enjoying it so much I was looking to see if there was a good movie version or recorded play.

Any suggestions?

Our library has two movies: a 1991 version directed by Kenneth Branagh and a 1987 Alec McCowen version. I can't tell for sure but suspect that these are recorded stage plays not movie adaptation; both are take 2 CDs. I've put both on hold to review them but if anyone has seen either and has any comments, it might save me about a week's worth of evenings

Haven't seen either of those, but generally anything Kenneth Branagh does is worth seeing.
I have seen another version, a 1996 adaptation starring Immogen Stubbs and Helena Bonham Carter. It was wonderful.
It's available on Netflix, if that helps.

Oh, we loved that '96 version with Imogen Stubbs -- Ben Kingsley is Feste, Nigel Hawthorne is Malvolio, and it's great. My kids all laughed and laughed (and any mild Shakespearean bawdiness went over the heads of my youngers). It's a beautiful production, too.

Sounds like a ringing endorsement for the 1996 version! I will make an effort to track it down!! Thanks so much, Ladies!

We decided on and watched two of the versions available to us: the 1991 Kenneth Branagh directed made-for-TV stage version, and the 1996 movie with Helena Bonham Carter and Imogen Stubbs.

Both were true to the play as we'd read it and very enjoyable. Overall, I'd watch either one again BUT (and this is a minor but) if I had to choose one, I'd watch the movie/Helena Bonham Carter version. If you're not familiar with the storyline, mishaps arise when a young woman, dressed as a man, is mistaken for her look-alike brother. In the 1991/Branagh version, the woman is not as believable as a man and the similarities between brother and sister in appearance are more of a stretch. The siblings in the 1996/movie version are quite alike and Imogen Stubbs is convincing as a man---enough that as a viewer, you are pulled into the story a bit more.

In a nutshell,
1991/Kenneth Branagh
1996/Helena Bonham Carter

We just watched that one again -- on Epiphany/Twelfth Night!
