Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm so lost with phonics. How important is it as a "subject" on it's own? Last year, when we had Seton books, I gave up on spelling and phonics because I felt they were too much effort for too little worth. Now, I'm more designing my own curriculum, pulling from different book lists like MA and MODG. MA doesn't seem to have anything specific about phonics, but MODG does. So, how important is it to teach phonics? Isn't that part of learning to read?

My oldest two children are readers and with both of them I did a phonics program to teach them the basics. With my oldest I used Abeka (before I knew about all of the beautiful Catholic HS programs!) and with my second son we did Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons and then moved on to the Little Stories for Little Folks readers with CHC.
