I have been using these readers with DS5 and he LOVES them. They are cute and sometimes funny. They always have a nice message in them. However, we are now in Book 11 of the first level. I feel like the last few books have made some major leaps. In this current book, he had to learn the "th" sound, "all" and a couple new sight words. I think that is a lot for one little book. We are way ahead in the readers from where we are in phonics. I am just getting worried that these move too fast. DS really loves reading the books and always wants to read a new one. I love that because he is really enthusiastic. I was just wondering if anyone could maybe recommend some other readers to use for now and then we can come back to these once we catch up in phonics. DS complains about phonics, but loves reading out of the readers. Last night, he just got really frustrated because there was so much new stuff in this book. I thought it was a little unfair to cover all of that in one book and it seems to continue that way.

I found these online.
The library usually has good beginning readers like Bob Books.
I forgot to add that my oldest began with LSLF when she was newly 5. She was not ready (it progressed too fast), so we put it aside and that fall (at 5-1/2 due to a late birthday) she went to K. They did not start actual readers until after Christmas when she was turning 6, and she did really well. A year made a huge difference in her ability to read. Now, in first grade she breezed through the rest of LSLF and reads on or above grade level.

Thanks for sharing that link. I agree that the LSLF are great, but they move so quickly. I think I will shelve them for a few months and focus on phonics and easier readers. I love the German translations available too since we are teaching German here!

We are using LSLF to teach our granddaughter to read. I noticed in the Parents' Guide instructions that they suggest you don't move ahead too fast, but just read about two stories a week, and then practice the stories in between. (And of course do the exercises mentioned in the Guide for each story.)
I don't know when you bought your set, but the newer editions have worksheets for each story for more phonics and reading practice before the child goes to the next story. They also have the Silly Willy game that lets kids practice the phonics, too.
If your son complains about phonics but loves reading out of the readers, I wouldn't worry too much. He is getting the phonics: It's just mixed in the stories and the games.
You could add some other little books, but we've found out that a lot of primary books mix short and long vowel sounds right off the bat. That can really be confusing. If your son likes what he's doing and is learning to read so quickly, something must be working! Maybe just slowing down to the pace mentioned in the guide would be just the ticket.

It's not a reader, but I have to recommend the Leap Frog series of DVD's on phonics and reading. They work GREAT!
My daughter started with those, and went on to finish level 1 of LSFLF this year in K. We haven't started level 2 yet, but she's reading level 2 beginning readers so I'm happy. Plus leap frog taught her to sound things out and spell!

Your post made me laugh b/c my son (just turned 5 yesterday) can't stand readers! He only likes to learn from games, flash cards, and workbook-type activities.  You can always try Bob Books, which we have and are popular. The first set may be too easy for him, but it could help build his confidence and give him something to read while he's working on phonics. I just got the second set from the library (Advanced Beginners), and they are now adding in a few more site words per book (e.g. 'was' & 'saw'), so the pace is picking up a bit.
My question is how "fluent" is your son when reading the LSFLF readers? I always wonder when to move on to the next (I have Bob Books and McRuffy readers, but they all are basically the same in structure). He is quite slow and still sounds out most words, but he gets bored reading the same book everyday. Since phonics readers build on one another, I assume it's okay to move on even if he isn't reading it at all quickly?

I move ahead when he can read the book and only needs to sound out 1 or 2 words.

I guess I should redo all the previous books, since he sounds out about every 2nd or 3rd word.

BTW, I wish my son would get frustrated reading the same books over and over. He wants to read EVERY reader EVERY day.
