I am thinking about using some of the CHC materials for my son who will be in 2nd next year. I was surprised at the reading ability level for their "Bigger Stories For Little Folks" though. It seems rather difficult for a 2nd grader, or at least my 2nd grader! Has anyone else found that to be true? We've been doing fairly well, I thought, with reading this year. But now I'm not so sure. i really don't want to purchase LSFLF at this point as I have so many other reading curriculums, and we've really found our groove using the CM methods and phonics. Should I push him along in reading and try to have him ready for next year? What is your opinion? I should be pretty good at this by now since I've taught 3 other kids to read, but I'm all of a sudden feeling very insecure about this! Any thoughts?

Children learn to read at different ages and with different speeds.
He is reading, foster enjoyment of reading and you'll be having to pry the books away from him before you know it

I also thought the reading level was high for CHC 2nd. I read the reading assignments to my dd--because we LOVE the stories--and try to find other things for her to read. It is an awesome prep, with a little tweaking, for FHC.
I also had another mom who uses CHC volunteer she thought it a little hard for 2nd also. But we still love CHC.

BiggerSFLF was well beyond my first two children in terms of reading ability at the age prescribed in CHC, although they really enjoyed hearing it read aloud at that age!! (There was a little variation, but for the most part, by 2nd grade both were reading independently.) I think CHC made another book to fit between LittleSFLF and BiggerSFLF...but I haven't looked at it closely (you might check their website though).
Anyway, your impression was my impression as well, Becky. I just used Amelia Bedelia, Frog and Toad, Little Bear, BOB books, etc....the standard first reader type book for them to cut their teeth with reading independently and we moved on from there and I read BiggerSFLF aloud. The children loved *Greg*. I think every family with boys must have a *Greg*.

No way! He's doing great! Keep moving at his speed and use skill-appropriate books for him to read from. That's my thought anyway!

The Bigger Stories for Little Folks is a nice in-between. That really helped my ds bridge the gap between LSFLF and the Devotional Stories books.
My ds has a fall birthday, so this fall, in 2nd grade, he turned 8, which makes him an older 2nd grader. We started the year with the Bigger stories books, then went on to the Devotional books. It was harder for him at first, but after a few weeks he really got going in the Devotional books and whizzed through the first. Now he is well into the second.
I think wanting to hear more about Greg really motivated him .
By comparison, the Faith and Freedom readers we have for second seem much. much easier than the CHC readers.

I'll second this. My second grader started with Bigger Stories in the fall. It was a nice transition for us from the readers Jen mentioned. She's already gone through the Devotional Stories for Little Folks and we are currently reading through Catholic National Reader book 2 (much harder but she is enjoying it very much, something about the older feel of the book, pictures and messages appeal to her, plus I already had it from our Kolbe days .)

Only one of my three(so far ) second graders has been ready to use Devotional Stories as a reader and that child started reading independently at 4 1/2 years of age-she had lots of practice time under her belt by grade two.
